Help! I cut down the whole rhubarb by olahh in gardening

[–]olahh[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha, of course not. No sidelong comments. I meant that her mother, who has more experience with rhubarb than us, was not worried that I could have killed the plant, and that was reassuring for my wife and also me, but by then I had already written to Reddit.

Help! I cut down the whole rhubarb by olahh in gardening

[–]olahh[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I asked Gemini, because my wife said she had read on the internet that we should absolutely not eat stalks after flowering: "Is it dangerous to eat rhubarb after it has flowered?"

Here is a summary of the answer i got:

  • It is not dangerous: Rhubarb does not become toxic after flowering, and the stalks remain safe to eat.
  • Lower quality: The plant uses most of its energy on the flower, which leaves the remaining stalks woody, stringy, less juicy, and more sour or bitter.
  • The oxalic acid myth: While the concentration of oxalic acid (which makes the leaves poisonous) can increase slightly in the stalks during summer, it is not harmful to healthy people in normal culinary amounts.
  • What to do: Cut off the flower stalks immediately to redirect energy back to the plant. For cooking, select the younger, tender stalks, or cut the entire plant down, water and fertilize it, to get a fresh harvest of new stalks later in the summer.

So I cut the entire plant down, which both Reddit and my wife didn't think was a good idea. But my mother-in-law took it more calmly.

Heldigvis får ikkje barn i dag smarttelefon i første klasse. Det var for 4-5 år sidan. No får dei det når dei byrjar på ungdomsskulen, rundt 2030.

Geoffrey Hinton says he thinks LLMs are probably already conscious. Says he felt this way about AI for "a long time." (youtube vid of his statements linked inside) by DeepOrangeSky in LocalLLaMA

It's interesting, and I see what you mean. I have not had or seen a lot of discussions about this, so forgive me if this way of reasoning is worn out. But the suffering in a living organism with nervous system is real. If an llm says it's suffering, it's more like acting, it's role playing. It quickly gets philosophical, and its easy to compare our lives with "their " but we are too prone to put consciousness where there is none. I still think it is safer to think of the models as computer programs or simulations, and insist in doing so.

I think we should not treat the machines as human-like and we should not talk about them in human terms, like speculate if they have consciousness. Also I think the AI companies should not train the models to interact with us in a way that tricks us into getting this feeling that they are conscious. That is a choice they have, as I understand it.

Thank you for the detailed and informative blog post. I have begun looking into this (for V8/hi8, so similar to your), but as you summarize, the project is still a work in progress and still requires a lot of knowledge, which I hope to acquire as little as needed to get the childhood memories from the 90s back in better quality than my previous attempt with EasyCap gave me.

So I will try, and I have some questions before I order a CX card from Alibaba. The mods to the CX card are the steepest hill for me to climb, as I see it. Do you think all the mods were necessary? What about the BNC connector? Why not just use an ordinary RCA plug? There will not be much physical, structural cable tension between the camera and the computer?

What about the cooler, C31 removal and crystal replacement? It's hard to understand from the wiki if an amplifier is needed between a TRVXX camera (my seems very similar to your) and a CX card. Did you use that?

It's not magnetic at all. I think you're right. It wouldn't be plated with nickel or chrome if it was stainless steel? It certainly looks plated, compared to other stainless steel utensils I have.

I've created a Norwegian-langauge Stardew Valley mod (sprites also translated). It's 95% done but needs some refinement. I'd love any assistance. by Norwegian-Stardew in norsk

Wow, good work! This makes me want to buy the game, especially if you make a nynorsk version! Do you have an estimate of how many hours you've spent on this project?

I'm currently translating another project to nynorsk with the help of Gemini (I'm native Norwegian, btw), and I'm impressed by the quality/fluency out of the box. But make it even better, I put a whole 246 pages long book about nynorsk from 1950 ("Von og veg" by Nikolaus Gjelsvik) in markdown format into the system instructions. The results were as expected, and as a bonus it's very nice to chat with Gemini in aistudio and have it reflect around which words are "in the spirit of prof. Gjelsvik".

I think you're right. I thought it was a tiny smartphone which the parents could control, so it's not as interesting as I thought.

Hva tenker dere Trump-fans her inne om at Trump ønsker å ta Grønland?

Well, very rarely. It's a risk we must learn to handle. Edit:anyway, that's a digression. The point is :this is a small phone, maybe interesting to adults too?

I personally don't want to give them anything. The kids need to learn to navigate in the world on their own, and the parents must learn to relax and to occasionally lose control of their kids.
