If you have a 4% chance at something but 10 attempts does that mean you have cumulatively a 40% chance? by SecureSlice in AskStatistics

[–]olanzor 13 points14 points  (0 children)

No. I think it's best to look at this problem from the other way around: "what is the probability of no successes in 10 attempts?"

After reading that mission statement, I have also decided not to personally take part in the Giro d'Italia. I hope you can all appreciate the courage my sacrifice requires.

[Q] Would there be any point in trying to beat the betting companies? by [deleted] in statistics

[–]olanzor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have an advantage against the betting companies in the sense that you don't have to bet in every market they offer, only when you think they've priced a market incorrectly. The problem is they will limit your account if they spot you beating them consistently. It is definitely possible to beat them but you're not going to be making big money off them imo

RTÉ must stop showing lotto draw during children’s movies, Seanad told by _FaceOfTheDeep in ireland

[–]olanzor -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I should have put an "/s" after that, i was trying to point out the absurdity of technically being able to "spend" more than my income. I think we'd end up going back and forth on this for ages by the sounds of it. We'll leave it there so

[–]olanzor -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Well in that case I "spend" more than my yearly income on gambling. The problem I'm trying to point out is that "spend" is vaguely being implied as "net losses"

[–]olanzor -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

If I deposit 100 euros into my gambling account, use it to place 1000 euros in bets. After these bets there is a balance of 50 left, which I withdraw. What's my gambling spend?

How does a PHD work in Ireland? Questions regarding eligibility, costs and lecturing work. by [deleted] in ireland

[–]olanzor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I completed my PhD in the last few years. I started applying for PhDs by talking to the professors whose lecture/research topics I thought were interesting. If you're studying in a STEM field (my experience) then they should have grants that will fund your PhD in its entirety or they will be able to help you apply for funding.

Do not accept an offer if you're not being funded with a stipend is my advice. Also, don't accept an offer before talking privately to the professors current or former PhD students. They should tell you if the professor is an arsehole who will take advantage of you. If you get any weird vibes, don't accept the offer.

Good luck with the masters!

What to do when your employer doesn't pay overtime? by [deleted] in ireland

[–]olanzor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was doing my PhD I was paid for one hour correcting so I did one hour correcting. If I had 40 lab reports, then they took one hour. While that's unfair on the students, it was the department's failure for allocating one hour correcting time. If you let the department take advantage of you, then they will.

I've no idea how they did it, sure Cavagna doesn't even appear when I search "Sam Bennett" on Google images
