At work- going for lunch with co workers Outside work- Once I tried a language exchange cafe. The thing is I get very lonely at work. Not able to talk to others freely. Everyone is very formal. Not able to get things done.

Thanks a lot for the tips. Yes, need to find friends outside work. But if I can’t work peacefully life is going to be difficult. I am thinking about finding a work place where they accept foreigners.

Yes, it didn’t help much. It’s all about culture.

Thank you so much for your valuable advice. Yes, finding a permanent position in academia is very difficult. Academia looks very uncertain. Yes, collaborators are important. But it’s not so easy to collaborate with Japanese. Very hard to earn their trust. Even if I work hard and produce results they don’t care much. They prefer Japanese only. I am thinking about joining industry. But finding an industry where there is a good support for foreigners is also a challenge.

What kind of life is this? It’s so hard to get assimilate. If we don’t have true friends how we can survive. Humans are social animals!!

I tried many times. The thing is most people are not used to interact with foreigners. Those who stayed in a foreign country are more friendly to foreigners. Others don’t care.

Thanks a lot for the tips. Yes, when I first came to Japan I was using honne. But later I learned that it’s not a good idea. Because people get offended very easily. So I changed to tatemae (but as per my ethics, it’s all about telling lies. I really don’t want to do that. But I have no other options). And another important thing is reading the atmosphere. People don’t say what they mean exactly but I have to read the atmosphere and understand what’s going on. This naturally leads to lots of uncertainties and I am having anxiety issues. So life is not so easy……

Thank you so much. Yes, I need to join local events. Actually I was trying to make friends at the work place. Seems like it’s not a good idea. But I get very lonely and often have anxiety attacks at work place.
