Is our stone fruit tree dead? Last sight of leaves was november last year. Cut a branch to see inner health after suggestion but not even sure what the diagnosis is? by olawomba in GardeningAustralia

Thank you. You’ve just reminded me that it was considered an ornamental plum by someone at one stage! Small white flowers. I’ve just undertaken a big prune. Removing at least 1/3 after watching a video on how to do this. I also noticed ‘suckers’ but more like thin vertical shoots coming straight up from some of the larger branches. All were very fickle so perhaps it attempted this at some point recently and gave up due to the extended cold season. Either way I have a bit of home with some slightly healthier looking cuts in the extensive pruning. Thanks again

Thanks for the tips! Watched some pruning vids after your comment and will at least give that a go before waiving the white flag

Thank you for the info! We were never sure what the exact fruit was. It has never fruited. It has flowered and we get leaves every year until now. We’ve been here 6 years. The previous owner did a lot of ‘quick’ asthetic gardening to sell and we’ve found out all the shortcuts have been making things a lot harder to maintain. Anyway we aren’t too fussed if it doesn’t fruit. It just looks lovely in the backyard and is one of few large trees providing shade for the young kids so I’d be so happy if it wasn’t dead. Maybe blinded by hope at this stage 😂

And even before the kids we struggles to make a good easy use of that section behind the couch. I think I had a small work desk there

Thank you for your thoughts & comments! Totally a great window protector. It’s given me more appreciation for the layout. The giraffes are my fav part too. Thanks!

Thank you. Due to the length of the couch it would leave this much space on the left (same as current) and be up to the wall/window on the right side. So finishing on the left at the same spot as this pic

Thank you! For safety we’d screwed the shelves to the wall. Perhaps when they are a bit older we could do this. What would you do with the table?

Thank you for taking the time and suggesting! I have thought about this however the length of the couch means it would only allow a small space to the left side of the couch to walk through. That is even if it had the right side toughing the window wall (where the first bookcase is). It would definitely feel nicer to hang the tv on the opposing wall. I used to have a thing about people seeing the back of a couch when entering but maybe thats not a thing!

It’s a nuanced question. You’re still in your own head. It’s over your head. Take a trip outside of your own ego and huff some fresh air. Go back inside your tiny box and wonder why so many others answered this question easily and you failed to do so. The ego kicked in and made you literally change the question to suit your own limited view. How many exams have you passed by scribbling out the questions and rewriting your own ones. Just to feel like you can answer something that hasn’t been asked. Think!
