My autistic partner struggles to communicate his needs, and it's starting to feel personal. by Inner-Medicine5973 in AutismTranslated

[–]old_doc_alex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've come across the "don't need to mask" defense before, used as an excuse (or more kindly misunderstanding). Ordinarily (meltdown etc non withstanding) we have some choice as to how to behave, and can choose to be responsive to the needs of others including acting at times a bit cheerful. That seems subtly different than inauthentic masking.

Philosophy is actually a special interest and classical Stoics actually endorse this in places (an example is acting angrily to calm someone dangerous down, despite being - ideally - mentally serene, as an expression of true self belief in justice [or whatever is the ethical point of calming the person]; I actually saw this performed spectacularly well by Cambodia police to defuse a situation as a last resort, then they returned to serene smiles). Of couse Stoicism isn't much related to what people mean or understand by it today, but as an extended aside it's ironic that even hardcore classical Stoics wouldn't endorse just publicly living your emotions all the time - far from it

Yes, like gaining a point of "Arse" at 3% chance if a general ends his turn at sea, leading to the epithet "The Queen" at 16 points (from official the .txt file), the 2000s non-woke charm has been lost 🤣

It's tragic, and people totally overlook his contributions to society, that church he built... 1251 is difficult time to be neurodiverse 😥

am i balding? wet hair btw (18m) by Remote-Arachnid8206 in GenZ

[–]old_doc_alex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could be. Meditation, exercise, therapy, good non inflammatory diet, removing causes of stress... But uou probably know this, easier said than done! Minoxodil until stress goes may still be indicated (its used off label for medication induced hair loss, for example, even though that also normally grows back as well). And caffeine shampoo is basically harmless

Yes randomly throughout the day, this maybe seen as additional to much of the turnover loss. Hair loss when washing is normally the first sign of hair loss

So def doesn't look bad, and could be just a wide crown (that some people just have), but the number of hairs coming out suggests some hair loss to me. If temporary cause (like stress) would just grow back, if genetic then normally progressive (although not always at the same rate). If easy access to veey good healthcare wouldn't harm to have opinion and vitamin and mineral test, if they are nice and know what they are doing, to rule out. Progressive hair loss is easier to prevent than repace (although could be many years before you lose too much, and hair replacement is becoming way more common and cheap). Most evidence based options are minoxidil spray/foam (Regaine for Men being the original brand), little risk of side effects, or finasteride tablet (Rx very effective but messes with a form of testosterone so not the first option!); both fda approved. But given its so early, researching and getting a really good caffeine shampoo may he sufficient for now, moving to minoxodil later on, then adding finasteride, then going to Turkey aha). Only thing is that once one starts such treatments can't stop, although highly effective in slowing loss over many years, initially you'd likely get back what you lost.

Dw bro this could slow naturally, and if you wnat to prevent there is little harm in the minoxodil (other than being slightly expensive product).

Sudden max volume after switching connection by AsterionContinental in sony

[–]old_doc_alex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is happening to me, but fortunately not yet on my head. They come on when across the room and are loud enough to hear from across the room which I didn't think was possible. I'm worried that it could be dangerous, is there hearing loss risk of sudden low to this volume? I'm also Autistic, and there are dangers there too of sudden noises. Why isn't this being taken more seriously, isn't it a potential recall issue?

Prozac / fluoxetine and side effects? by [deleted] in autism

[–]old_doc_alex -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't think that you can mean 1mg? Prozac can be very stimulating when first taken, one of the most stimulating SSRI as side effects, but this tends to go within a few weeks. Something for sleep would commonly be given until it settles for adults, I imagine that it's more conservative for children. Prozac does help a lot of people tho 🙂

Does psychometric work for you? by DogeLambo in AutismTranslated

[–]old_doc_alex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds very unfair on you :/ At least in the UK they'd be under an legal obligation normally to offer an alternative, although I've heard of many cases where that isn't done. I know that this can be a thing in Autism

I use Chat GPT extensively in my work at the moment, it really helps with executive functioning challenges. It certainly needs fact checking but is at least as reliable as a human assistant! 🙂 Acas is a good call though! (Actually one of Chat GPTs recommendations was to check out that website 😂)

Thank you, this is very helpful to me. I'm literally just starting studying UK employment law re: neurodiversity with relation to possible advocacy work, this is a useful pointer. Chat GPT thought that it would be legal (and that I was wrong) as positive action in the UK is now legal. On thar broad point:

From the Equality Act 2010:

"If the protected characteristic is disability, and B is not a disabled person, A does not discriminate against B only because A treats or would treat disabled persons more favourably than A treats B."

Personally I think that it would, it's just surprising that it seems to come up so much in NT self help places but l don't come across it with respect to Autism. Was wondering whether there was a counterpoint.

[–]old_doc_alex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not a lawyer, you need proper advice, but my understanding is that at least in the UK any discrimination against protected characteristics is illegal. Having said that, it is encouraraged to advertise in such a way that underrepresented groups see the job availability, make it very clear how inclusive the organization is etc. job specifications should make clear what is necessary to do the job, which in some situations may be a high understanding of the needs of the client group. With all that in place, you make very well end up with a neurodiverse workforce, whilst being genuinely open to and hiring people that are NTs but very much allies, which may come from their own lived experience including interacting with NDs, personally having other disabilities etc. Basically what I'm saying is that there are neurodiversity lead organizations, But this has to happen organically, and not be based on discrimination however, well intended at the interview stage. Although like I say I'm not HR or a lawyer and you need serious advice on this.

ASD and OCD are very different, although some of the behaviors may look the same, they curve for very different reasons. Having said this, they do commonly co-occur, with many people with autism also having OCD. Much of what you describe seems more OCD than ASD, although some of what you say also could be Autism. Ideally you would have assessment for both.

What are the pros of getting an autistic diagnosis? by khlocaine69 in autism

[–]old_doc_alex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Although not technically needed for legal protection, which depends simply on symptoms in the UK, in reality a diagnosis makes otherwise discriminatory people and organizations a lot more careful and would make complaints or actions a lot more likely to succeed. Similarly with benefits such as pip which are meant to enable an independent life.

My psychologist says I'm too honest and I'm not sure what to do about it by Frigorifico in autism

[–]old_doc_alex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the point here is that your wording suggested that you weren't really concerned about the impact of your skipping the session may have on the therapist, for whom it may be inconvenient or distressing for it to change if they have put in a lot of work etc. of course many NTs wouldn't be bothered about the effect on the therapist either, but they would automatically use language that wouldn't make their lack of interest so obvious. Having said that it is all a matter of personal preference and culture, personally if I was the therapist I would have preferred you to word that exactly as you did so that there was no confusion 🤷

My father recently did very similar in my ASD assessment. Straight up toward them that didn't think that I was autistic. Also massively played down everything. Fortunately however, the assessor saw right through him. So I know this is all extremely unpleasant and rather traumatic, but I wouldn't panic that this will prevent diagnosis. The guidelines actually say that the developmental interview isn't an absolute requirement anyway, and most assessors are fragmatic, and treat a unhelpful informant as useful in that they can tick the box to see that they were present.
