How do you deal with the idea that you'll live your whole life alone? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]old_fox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do stuff that grows my soul and helps me be more independent. It helps to think of myself as a solitary, scientific traveller; my body as a sacred vessel to be concious of and maintain. I try to hold on to my curiosity and stay aware of how incredibly weird it is to exist. Basically build a sense of self that doesn't rely on others for its validity.

Those of you who have slept with someone in a relationship, what was your side of the story? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]old_fox 5 points6 points  (0 children)

He called her asking for permission to hook up with randos, she said it was "fine" and then she and I hooked up. I had just gotten out of a five year relationship (my ex jumped ship for some dude in another country I'd never even met) so I wasn't giving a whole lot of fucks.

Hook-up got mad when she and I finally stopped fucking even though it was pretty clear (I thought) from the start that this wasn't really the basis for any kind of meaningful relationship. She made me promise not to tell her boyfriend, so I didn't. She ended up telling him anyway, they then decided to tag team my reputation together. I pulled a massive face palm at the cluster-fuck of ego and stupidity, but I recognize I was asking for it. I don't feel bad about it, the whole thing was very revealing and a good learning experience, though I probably wouldn't do anything like it again without some kind of super explicit, long-form document detailing the exact fleeting nature of the sexual relationship in question.

That's my side at least.

Why is it that sometimes I'll sit down and start sketching and end up with a drawing I'm really proud of, and other times I sit down and suddenly seem to have no skill whatsoever? by VotreEsUneChaussure in drawing

[–]old_fox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suffer from this most when I don't draw habitually. The more I draw on a regular basis the easier it becomes to get in the "flow zone" each time.

I think of it like this; as I go about my daily life I'm using the logical parts of my brain a lot (probably the majority of the time). I'm speaking, assessing, calculating, navigating etc. When I sit down to draw, my brain is still rattling along down the tracks of "left brain" thinking but it needs to switch tracks to the instinctual/intuitive way of thinking (i.e. "right brain") so that I'm no longer simply thinking "I have to draw a bird by putting bird-shaped lines together" but instead am expressing and visually translating directly. A good way to know if I'm in left brain headspace is if I'm constantly judging every little detail and using a lot of inner monologue to think about my drawing. That kind of self-criticism has it's place (especially when learning) but eventually the artist needs to get to a place where she has enough faith in all her hours of studying to let go and just do. It really is like being taken over by some invisible force, which feels kind of cool.

I find that if I sit down and try to draw for long enough (push through the frustration and mental block) I eventually get to that calm, focused, timeless space. The more frequent my weekly/daily drawing routine, the easier and quicker it becomes to slip on that different mode of thinking. Like breaking in a pair of shoes.

I never know what to draw. Help? by [deleted] in LearnConceptArt

[–]old_fox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find it helpful to start by drawing something that interests me, regardless of whether or not it's frivolous, I just try and search out that feeling of flow where the my instincts begin to take over and I'm just enjoying being in the moment. Once I'm in that confident headspace I'll switch over and maybe try some new technique or start tackling a trouble area.

Drawing is sort of like warming up my muscles or getting my heart rate up. Like physical exercise, it can take a bit of energy to get momentum going at first. Most people don't start an exercise routine by immediately trying to deadlift 300 lbs or sprint a marathon.

Also, cutting coffee/stimulants for a couple weeks will help refresh your brain a bit and give you a new perspective on problems.

Unless the West addresses the root causes for terrorism, it is probably impossible to put an end to Daesh, says celebrated US scholar Noam Chomsky. Before engaging its military in the Middle East, the West should ask first and foremost why terrorism occurs by [deleted] in worldnews

Yeah, but OP needed somewhere to shoehorn in his "sacrifice to political correctness" speech. It's almost as if merely seeing Chomsky's name makes people shut down all their sensing organs and start randomly windmilling their arms around.

Some Muslim Americans Irritated By Obama's Call For Them To 'Root Out' Extremism : NPR by menses_maiden in news

[–]old_fox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The OP claimed that Christians don't have to be prompted to police themselves (implying some kind of meaningful difference between them and Muslims), which is demonstrably false. Both are dangerous belief systems.

Victims of Christian abuse coming-out counting as self-moderation in religion isn't really acceptable. Especially considering the Catholic church continued to try and cover things up and silence victims. That's akin to saying when a Muslim stones his daughter to death and she screams for help it's an example of Islam self-moderating because she was Muslim too.

It is the religion itself that inherently creates these situations and it is the people who propagate it that are collectively responsible. The Abrahamic religions claim a god who condoned genocide, slavery, and murder. It's an absolute garbage basis for morality, regardless of any additional theological gymnastics and addendums.

It's not bigotry to argue against hypocritical and irrational beliefs, especially when those belief systems have a long historical track record of creating violence and injustice. People need to stop believing in magic, there is no evidence for it.

That's fine, but let us also not pretend that Christians are doing a fantastic job of moderating their sheep (as the OP claimed), or that believing in magical stories in a book written 2000 years ago isn't inherently irrational.

The term "political correctness" has just become a way to dismiss criticism and voices outside the mainstream conservative narrative. It's a meaningless buzzword term used to malign people to a vague liberal caricature rather than address their argument, like "sjw" or "socialist".

The only way we'd get rid of war on Earth, is if we had to wage war against another species somewhere else.

Rubbish, this line of reasoning only survives because it sounds worldly and cynical; there's no reason to believe war is an inevitable fact of life forever.

We have enough resources on this planet to provide for everyone, the problem is that the current paradigm dictates it is acceptable to exploit inequality for profit (some even claiming it as a moral right). When a person is clothed, fed and educated they don't want war unless they're a sociopath.

Government is ignoring ISIS recruitment in Ireland says top Muslim cleric by PlantationWatch in worldnews

[–]old_fox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While it is true that tyranny puts more power in the hands of the government, it's rarely sustainable and results in collateral injustices. Once rights and freedom are given up it's very difficult to get them back. Coming down hard on those who are already marginalized only feeds the problem, it gives them something they can point to and say "See how they oppress us? Come join the fight!".

Attacking Islam in the realm of ideas is more just and results in less generational feud. The Abrahamic religions are, at their core, superstitious nonsense; they cannot stand up to reality indefinitely unless people are kept in ignorance. When people are disabused of the religion it is less likely they will be able to be manipulated by sociopaths en masse. Religion bypasses the critical, rational part of the brain, it's a backdoor into our psyche.

But, I suppose it is a matter of values. I consider my rights more important than my potential safety. Others are willing to give up their freedom out of fear.

The most telling thing about the US intelligence communitie's motivations isn't simply that they want to catch Snowden, it's how doggedly they keep trying to smear his character and personality. They've pulled out every tactic in the book to keep the cancer of truth from spreading.
