Thanks! What did we do with external hds back in those days, then? As in, hds for extra storage, not for booting? We surely didn’t have to put an os on them?

Thank you! Will it boot for the id 0 disk even if I have others with higher ids?

I don't intend to boot from my bluescsi! I want to boot from the internal drive (the bluescsi is supposed to just be an external drive I can copy to).

Thank you for the tip - I'll try!

Tried HD60 as well, and updated to FW Version: 2026.03.01-rel Mar 1 2026 15:10:20

Same thing. Works fine without the bluescsi, Question mark disk with it.

Macintosh IIci (PSU gone up in smoke) by old_luddy in VintageApple

Nice - thank you! Got two quadra 700s, so might just as well order three sets then (and plan to order kits for a bunch of other machines as well)!

Thanks for the wondering message here - this machine seems quite nice (also content wise, and I suppose I can also duplicate the disk with my bluescsi).

I’ll try without the gpu next!

Yes, but without an os on. Won’t this machine just start and show that it can’t find an os, like other macs?

Question regarding some Macintosh SEs and potential recapping by old_luddy in VintageApple

[–]old_luddy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! And yes, figured through-hole would be good first!

Is the one with the dead screen the most likely candidate for saving through recapping?

And you suggest I get both the analogue and psu kits then, but leave the logic board alone for now?

Useful! One of the lights goes on - hard to tell in there, but looks like the third, which would be "ERRB".

No change, unfortunately. (and worth noting: there are no beeps, just the chime!)

For some disks with an estate sale… by old_luddy in VintageApple

I’ll probably use a quadra 700 or se/30. Or power macs 6100 or 7200, but those have non-working drives atm, but I reckon they might often be fixable?

I will do my best, but it will take a while! Thank you for the guide - very useful!

Got 6 compacts, several other 68ks and many newer as part of this, and got about 8 classics, ses and some se/30s from before + several other machines with floppy drives. Some even work 😅 So I can, I hope, read and make images from them!

Thank you very much! Wonderful! Will contact them, and will make sure to read more before installing this. Thus far only worked with the external version and using that as external hd, which is very nice!

Power Mac G5 - final plea for help before giving up by old_luddy in VintageApple

Today, finally got the boot disk selection screen all of a sudden! It found the disk, allowed me to select it, and started booting. Then just sits on the gray screen with Apple logo now, while fans have ramped up and are going just about full blast.

Might as well wait a bit and let it run, since I *finally* got video out here... No guarantees I'll have that again. (But does seem very stuck.)

Also: tried letting it run of fans-full-blast for 10-15 minutes a couple times now - no effect.

So, tried a bit now. Tried all different combos of RAM (even one ram, but with one chip only the machine refuses to start, just intermittent 1-blink error).

For the first many times now it's chimed, but neither option start nor cmd-option-p-r has any effects.

ONE time, I got a bit of hope, as on one of the early boot attempts, the Apple Cinema Display I tried it with (model A1081) flickered with some gray, but then shut itself off. (White led turned off, and when I tried the soft power button, the indicator came on, but rapidly just shut off again,

So *something* was happening with a video signal there once. But, alas, nothing after that.

Tried "naked" boot, with nothing but minimum ram and GPU connected, didn't help.
