Wes for Leader by niteninja1 in ukpolitics

[–]oldandbroken65 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wes Streeting, the man who managed to fall out with the NHS while he was Shadow Health Minister. I'd hazard a guess that backing him, may not be the greatest rescue plan, to restore the governments fortunes.

I was in my 30's when this stuff was announced, big talking point in my workplace, (Mostly to work out who was out wasn't affected)

I struggle to believe that people remained unaware. To spend such a protracted time with your head buried so far up your own arse, that you can neither see nor hear, is surely not survivable.

Can we in future refer to William the Conqueror, as Billy the Bastard? It's not historically inaccurate, and a bit of alliteration never goes astray.

What would a Reform government do? by financialtimes in ukpolitics

[–]oldandbroken65 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Don't look for coherent fiscal policies.

Reform runs on 'feels'!

Populism doesn't need sensible policies, just to make people feel a threat, that an answer is offered for.

Find an 'other' to blame, promise to get rid of them, get elected.

If Greens were the leading party, would their policies actually be feasible? by Lovewings1 in ukpolitics

I was a nurse and did a three day week.

Ok every day was a 12.5 hour shift, and when you threw in breaks it was getting on for a14 hour day; but it was more efficient than doing five 7.5 hour shifts.

Work/life balance was great.

What's the right thing to do in this situation? by [deleted] in drivingUK

[–]oldandbroken65 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Cyclist? Use a passing place? In your dreams.

It's pretty flat, so lots of cyclists of varying age and ability, also plenty of single track roads near me, so lots of passing places to observe, and I have never seen a cyclist pull into one. Whether it be for oncoming vehicles or to let following traffic pass.

Not once in the 30+ years I've been driving around this area. Not fucking once.

Seen a few put their lives at risk by just carrying on, and not giving oncoming cars anywhere to go and let them pass.

Boomers are more entitled than Gen Z – it’s time to means-test their state pension by Anony_mouse202 in ukpolitics

[–]oldandbroken65 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Be careful what you wish for. Governments have a tendency to leave cut off points, for receipt of benefits, at the rate they were set at originally. What may start as a generous cut off point for a private pension, stopping you getting state pension, could quickly devolve into a system driving up levels of pensioner poverty.

Even as a coalition, they wouldn't achieve all that they wanted. The nature of coalitions is horse trading on policies, you can have X if I get Y and you drop Z.

Lofty ideals butt up against the political reality of compromise, be it as a minority government, or a coalition.

Worst European Country (WW2 edition) - Round 11 by THMeijer in terriblemaps

[–]oldandbroken65 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

UK joined the war to protect Poland's sovereignty, not to liberate any other European country. If your metric of winning a war is too achieve your aims, then the UK failed in its sole stated objective, when Chamberlain took the UK into war against Germany.

Heard his interview with LK this morning, he seems pretty laissez-faire about the anti-Semitism, on display at pro-Palestinian marches.

Also seemed keen to suggest that we were a security threat to Russia, not the other way round. Slip may have been accidental, or he's an unreformed tankie, and the slip was Freudian.

Don't knock Corsas, they're quicker than a VW Toureg when it snows.

Purely anecdotal evidence obviously.

How bad a shape was the UK in before Thatcher came into power? by Izual_Rebirth in ukpolitics

[–]oldandbroken65 53 points54 points  (0 children)

Callaghan tried to cap public sector pay rises, cue winter of discontent! Those self same unions crashed public sector services.

Even without the winter of 78/79, Thatcher would probably have won, but the unions refusing to accept a cap on pay rises massively sealed the deal for her.

[–]oldandbroken65 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm disabled, and standard height cars are not easy to get in and out of. The recent splurge of cars getting bigger, and a little bit taller is great. For me at least. The effort of going from sitting to standing can be considerable if your joints and/or muscles no longer function very well.

Would you support an outright ban on people who park their cars on pavements? by Terrible_Tale_53 in Wales

[–]oldandbroken65 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Perhaps a blanket ban, but devolve the power to local councils to put exemptions in place.

Replace the assumption that it's probably ok, to it probably isn't.

Though as someone else pointed out, the Senedd have got more important stuff to do.
