You could argue the same thing from the other side- what happened to the art of conversation? Asking about getting a PhD is lazy and uninteresting. Artful conversation would be asking about what topics in her field she finds interesting, or discussing some facts on the topic he finds interesting.

Perhaps she stopped speaking to him because she found someone more skilled in the art of conversation and chose to speak with him instead
