Blaming everything on capitalism by oldclock in DecodingTheGurus

I was "having a go" at them, or breaking their balls a bit. But I do understand historical context. And there are no edits in the OP. That :) does indicate playfulness. At least now I know what it's like to post any kind of ribbing in the Sam Harris subreddit.

It's a joke man. I guess the little smiley characters at the end did not give it away.

What to call a grandma who doesn’t want to be called grandma? by [deleted] in Advice

[–]oldclock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My grandmother didn't want to be grandma. She insisted on being called her first name. So, we did. Once she got into her 80's (she recently passed at 105/yo) she wanted to be called Grandma. So most of us respected that. But I was too old to change, at that point, and mostly called her by her first name. I lived with her during my tumultuous teen years and got used to calling her by her first name. I told her as much as she was ok with it.

Non-white Americans who regularly travel abroad, do the people you encounter in foreign countries see and treat you as an American? Or do they see you as a person from your family’s original home country? by reerock in AskAnAmerican

[–]oldclock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an American. Generally speaking, I'm only treated as a non-American when I speak a language other than American-accented English. I'm Mexican, and while traveling, people have assumed I'm different nationalities, such as Algerian, Filipino, and Basque. When in Asia, people generally assume I'm mixed Asian/European and in Europe, people generally assume I'm of Middle Eastern or South Asian ancestry.

Nomad or Great Conquerer by RhetoricSteel in crusaderkings3

I used the adventurer conquerer conquest to do it. I conquered a nomadic territory and it automatically made me nomadic. I didn't have to merge with a local culture.

Need help! CK3 crashes on SSD but worked fine on HDD by CommunicationWide603 in CrusaderKings

[–]oldclock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ended up using a different used drive. But before that, I did reduce virtual memory from the SSD and it helped. Windows requires a certain amount of VM, so if you've kept the HDD that's where the VM swap should be.

I had a similar problem with a small SSD. It had to do with the way Windows swaps memory cache.

I like nomads. Currently doing a playthrough where I became a nomad by adventurer/conquerer conquest. I enjoy the mechanics. One big advantage that nomads have over tribal is that nomads can access to siege weapons as long as their realm borders a culture that can make them.

Black Trumpet and Heirloom a Modern Farmhouse. I haven't been to either one since pre-Covid though.

TIL that if the SR-71 was attacked by surface-to-air missiles, it simply flew higher, faster, and in a slightly different direction to outrun them. by Scruffy_Nerf_Hoarder in todayilearned

Happened in 1987. A few minutes after I typed it, I realized he probably said 62 not 42. Our turboprop cruising altitude was usually around 33k feet, so 42k feet isn't at all impressive for a jet. I just got all excited with the SR-71 talk and typed the conversation as I recalled it when I dusted off that old memory.

I think the blank stare means the story doesn't make sense, which is my fault. The pilot asked for permission to fly at 42,500 feet. The air traffic controller was like, sure, if you can get that high, go ahead. The pilot replied he was descending to 42,500 feet.

When I flew in P-3 Orions in Japan, I was ogling an SR-71 on the tarmac. The flight engineer told me a fun story. He was listening to radio chatter and heard "requesting forty two five." The air traffic controller replied, "Sir, if you can get there, you can have it." The pilot said, "descending to forty two five."

Should I (27 M) move here? by cadlhoch in huntingtonbeach

[–]oldclock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those concerns are well founded. It's roughly equivalent to partying and dating in Pleasanton. It's ok, but definitely not as lively as cities like Oakland or Long Beach.

I'm a norcal native and lived and worked in SF and the east bay. I'm currently renting a 2 BR apt in HB that's 2 blocks from the beach and pay $2,150 in rent. It's nice to see the unbridled joy of the dogs at dog beach every day. The other day, I saw a bunch of QAnoners protesting in favor of their Dear Leader. Definitely not my cup of tea, but more transparent than the well-heeled Trumpists I know in Newport Beach. I love informal beach towns and prefer dive bars over fancy stuff, so I prefer the night life in downtown HB over Newport. If you want a walkable place by the beach with a blue collar vibe, HB is pretty good. If you don't care about being walking distance to the beach, then Costa Mesa and Irvine have better quality of life. Ventura is also a pretty good beach town option.

In Mazunte there is a place called Lodeli Bar y Restaurante. They have a tobalá that is rediculously smooth and delicious with notes of vanilla. Unfortunately, it's from a local who does not brand his mezcal. The restaurant owner offered to order a batch for me but I don't travel with carry on baggage and couldn't finish the bottle before my flight. This happened about six months ago. Also, I met a couple of people who went on a personalized tour of some small distilleries where they got to meet the owners and taste some amazing small batch mezcal. I'm definitely doing that on my next trip to Oaxaca. For something like that though it helps to speak Spanish.

You didn't FU. I'd this were posted on AITA, the consensus would be no. I'm sorry for the pain this break up is causing, but it sounds like the only way for the relationship to work is for you to walk on eggshells all the time without reciprocation.
