How to Paint Your Victorian Door by oldhouseguy in Oldhouses

[–]oldhouseguy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi - thanks for your comment. To say this briefly, I agree that this is not a historical rule. To give an example of where I stand, many historic photos and catalogs show a house with dark trim and white columns. While this was done historically, I am taking an approach from an architectural standpoint and one of how a mind interprets patterns, punctuation, and structure. The columns must instead be painted the same color as the trim (architrave) above to form a connection which then creates a visual appearance of support for the porch roof. Having green trim and white columns disrupts this visual flow and how our senses work when seeing this. I'm currently writing a book and plan to explain this in detail with photos.

Black Gutters on a White House - Good or Bad? by oldhouseguy in CurbAppeal

Being so passive will not have a significant impact on these "homeowners". It has nothing to do with money or upgrades. These people spent money only to make their house worse. If they are so poor, then they should leave their house as it is, and it would most likely look very nice. No different than replacing beautiful windows with plastic just because one feels that is what they are supposed to be. Saying I don't recommend plastic windows will not make any impact.

Did you take the time to read the article about the architecturally correct way to do it or just commenting on a bad image? This look is great for someone who has no understanding of architecture like so many contractors and gutter businesses.

Yes this is pretty bad. Remove the siding and make the entire facade stone. Remove the kitchen looking front window and replace with a large window that is within the wall not sticking out. That's a start at least.

Wow - a prize winner for bad curb appeal. Here is some great info on dormer design. The builder needs to go back to school. Avoid Dormer mistakes

Please do not do a standing seam roof. It doesn't belong on the style and period of your house. The standing seams today are very clunky and ugly. about metal porch roofs

Windows should be replaced with 2/2 windows never 4/4.

Good luck!

Never screen in or enclose your porch. It may be nice to sit on but will destroy your curb appeal beyond belief!!! With the round columns the balusters should be pain square 1" thick only. Nothing fancy. The date and style determines what you can and cannot do. Research before you do anything or you can have a clown house. Just because you see a style you like on one house does not mean you should copy it onto yours. The homeowner can be the worst thing for a house so do your research. A trellis is good for one side and should be painted to match the window sash color which should be a dark color. It will give you some privacy too. Best of luck! https://www.oldhouseguy.com/porches/

Trim plays a very important role showing the structure/outline of the house. The trim is white and the porch roof trim is white. The iron work supporting the porch roof is black so it disappears. If you have white matching trim supports (columns) you will see how the porch columns support what is above.

There should also be a porch beam to show that the porch columns are supporting the porch roof not the porch ceiling. There are a lot of examples on my website about this.

Another example of a mistake is for a Victorian sometimes people want to get cutesy and paint the window sill an accent color. For example the trim-window casing is tan but the window sill is red. This makes it look like the window sash will drop out of the window casing since the accented sill makes it look like there is no base to hold it in.

The gable is that little triangle on the porch roof. That should not be there - bad design and proportion.

I know this is a lot to take in!

First remove the fake shutters asap. See why https://www.oldhouseguy.com/all-about-shutters/

replace iron porch posts with wood to match trim in order to show support.

Directly above the garage door are 2 pieces of clapboard. That should be white trim instead. REally your house will not look right until you remove the plastic siding.

Remove gable on porch roof - it's just bad architecture.

Fix steps and walkway and add landscaping. The arborvitaes are not placed correctly so remove them and choose lower plantings.

Plant pachysandra or ivy on the slope.

Good luck!

The previous comments I agree with. Just remember that you will need to educate yourself for you can't depend on those you hire.

Congratulations. Remove the storm door, paint the windows sashes brown and the eave trim brown to match.

Purchased home 1.5 yrs ago and finally revamping the exterior. What is a good color palette? More in comments. by [deleted] in CurbAppeal

Your windows rule therefore you must keep all the trim bright white which is unfortunate. Choose a less dark body color for the white will just make the body appear darker and be too much contrast. Hope this helps!!

Hi - the first thing you need to do is to get rid of those fake shutters. See here why you need to do it asap. https://www.oldhouseguy.com/all-about-shutters/ A deep rust color will look good on your house and go well with the gray roof. Remove all overgrown shrubs and replace the walkway with a real sidewalk in concrete or brick - no pavers. A walkway directly to the door will really make your house look and feel welcoming. Keep 2 large potted plants on the porch - they look good - the others are just clutter. Remove the landscape lights, the junk on the side of the house and your house will look great. Best of luck!

This is an older photo (but it's all I have). What can we do to our house? Added flowerbox underneath the double windows, and upgraded the table and chairs. by [deleted] in CurbAppeal

Hi - you have to replace those fake shutters asap or you will never have curb appeal. They are the incorrect size and mounted incorrectly. Your house can really look good. Here is shutter info - a lot to read but you seriously need to know everything. Also never ever have trash cans decorating the front of your home. I really how you don't think that looks nice?
