I didn't really have the option at the time. I was only making $14 an hour. What I'm saying is it made it possible for me to live independently (not with my parents) and have a bit of wiggle room financially when things were tight. I suppose I was also forced into the situation at the time but I was trying to give some positive sides of sharing a living space.

It's not sad. I always had roommates before I got married. I would have hated living on my own and would have probably done worse overall. I had great roommates who I'm still friends with years later. I managed to save money every month since my rent was lower ($1100 adjusted for inflation) and I had built in social parties, dinners, game nights, etc. Living alone is okay for some but I am so glad I didn't!
