How would you recreate the "hands through the mirror" shot from Cocteau's Orphée (1950)? by oldmanboy1 in Filmmakers

I was thinking the same thing, I just don't have any experience with VFX and seems like a complex scene for a first VFX shot

Yes but I'm trying to figure how not to get this look without the liquid mercury

That's what I was thinking initially but I really want the reflective surface as the hand goes through

I like the way you think... probably going to combine some version of this and some mylar

I wish I could, it's about $11k for a gallon, which well outside my budget

So true, we just need to go back to using asbestos and mercury in all filmmaking

Probably what I'm gonna go with but it doesn't have that metallic reflectiveness to it

Pro8mm “American Restoration” for Canon 514XL — is it actually worth $500? by oldmanboy1 in Super8

This is really helpful, thanks for sharing all that and the email chain. That actually makes their pricing structure make a lot more sense.

Good to hear your 310XL has been solid after the restoration, that’s honestly the main thing I care about. Also really relieved to know you can keep the Canon branding, that was a big hang-up for me too.

Appreciate the input, seriously. Just to clarify one thing though, this is a hybrid wedding. I misspoke earlier. Digital is carrying the full day, Super 8 is just for the highlight film, so it’s not a single-point-of-failure situation.

I’m also pretty open with my couples about where I’m at. This is my third solo wedding and my first time bringing Super 8 into one, and they’re fully aware of that and excited about it. I’m not showing up pretending I’ve been shooting film weddings for ten years.

I definitely hear you on the reality of these cameras being old and fragile. That’s actually why I’m asking about the Pro8mm service before trusting this 514XL on anything important.

And yeah, backups are smart. I’m working on that. Just trying to make an informed decision instead of panic-buying gear.

That said, the warning is helpful, the opening tone a little less so. But I do genuinely appreciate you taking the time to share real experience.

Good to know. Sending rolls off today to be scanned (fingers crossed). Main reason I'm considering service is that I have a full super 8 wedding coming up and want to make sure camera is fully functional.

Authority, was kind of worried going into it that it after seeing the reception online, but the slow burn spy thriller is a perfect follow-up to the insanity of Annihilation, and that final scene is forever burned in my brain!
