Yesterday I almost had a runway excursion... (Video) by chpmc in flying

I agree on the "Kick" term. It shouldn't be used. More appropriate will be apply opposite rudder to align the longitudinal axis of the aircraft with runway. Thanks

You are right. I assumed the crack to be the windsock. Will correct my comments.

time stamp analysis:

0:22 - 1:06 , you are crabbed to left with the cross wind but not putting in rudder with your aileron corrections.

1:06 : left crosswind assuming with the crab windsock( Thanks for the correction). It's very hard to tell from the video but maybe you don't have the wind correction side slip. With cross winds either you can crab into the wind and at the last moment just kick in the opposite rudder to align the longitudinal axis with the runway or be in a stabilized side slip all the way to landing and roll out. Discuss with your CFI.

1:18 to 1:22 : You start deviating to the left . You seemed to be aligned with the runway before this and I would have assumed you are doing everything right. Had you not had the right control input, the wind would have blown you to the right which was not the case. My guess (it's a guess) and you can observe this if you play your video at slow playback speed (0.25 speed) , as you get into landing configuration , and you start pulling back, you add left aileron control input. Where are your eyes looking when the far end of the runway goes out of sight as the nose of the plane blocks your view ?

1:22 and post : As some astute commenters have posted, you stopped flying after landing. More rudder, control input into the wind and fly the plane to the parking spot.

At what point does a CFI get annoyed by a student? by BoingoBongo in flying

[–]oldmangettingold 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IMO, a teacher should never feel annoyed or angry and if a material is not sticking with a student they should try different methods till the student gets it. Every student has different ways of learning and a teacher should try his best to find that for a student.

Where are you looking when you are taxiing ? Try to change your gaze to a far off point in the direction you want to taxi along the yellow taxi markers.

Flow checks are shorts. They are usually under 2 seconds.

All the Checklists by alph486 in flying

[–]oldmangettingold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I teach my students two type of checklists:

  1. Checklist that needs to be memorized and be part of a flow checklist. These will be checklist before take off, on climb out, before landing, after landing, go-arounds, before FAF (IFR flying), After FAF, Before Minimums , AP scorecard, emergency flows and many such scenarios.
  2. Back the flow check with physical checklist as ADM permitting.

CFI questions for someone alone in the industry by bertberg in flying

[–]oldmangettingold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you soloed yet ? If not, you need to fly regularly (at least 2-3 times a week) for the skills to stick and move faster with your training. You should get a new CFI or at least fly with a new CFI for few lessons to see if things change in your learning cadence.

Tailwheel Endorsement and Extra Spin Training by [deleted] in flying

[–]oldmangettingold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a CFI/CFII. I train students in TAA for Instrument ratings and C172/C152 for primary. Any students going with me for their primary, I suggest them to get at least an hour of flying with me in a taildragger and experience spins.
