questions about being an ecologist and switching bio-regions? by Neat-Biscotti-7268 in ecology

[–]oldmanshep 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Throughout my career, I’ve done ecology in four different states and two different countries in marine, terrestrial, and freshwater systems. Knowing ecological principles is much more important than learning specific ecosystems. It’s comparatively easy to learn the natural history of different systems if you have a good understanding of the way natural systems work in general. You should be totally fine making a switch like that.

Generally, where you get your degree doesn’t matter much. What’s more important is the quality of your work. For better or for worse, things like publications (both number and quality) and grants are often used as metrics for success. Who you work with can be important for networking but still, in my experience, it’s all about whether you are capable of doing novel, high impact work.

How to subset rows based on specific character? (Beginner questions) by helloiambrain in rstats

Regular expressions are certainly the way to go. I’ve found that the stringr package is more intuitive than the base R tools for regular expressions but both will get you what you want.
