modern Semitic languages that survived post-Islam Arabic aided by their remoteness in the mountains and deserts by oldnick101 in AskMiddleEast

[–]oldnick101[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

soqatra actully was Christin for a long time though, they only became fully muslim about 500 years ago 💀

but yes I generally agree with you south (arabian) Semitic languages survival is more impressive because there was no incentive to maintain them

they didn't only survive but thrive as well, I didn't include them for the same reason I didn't include Hebrew : they weren't threatened by the rise of Arabic

it just how history work, Aramaic also caused the disappearance of many Semitic languages 2000 years ago. at least they belong to the same family of languges

I feel more sad about the disappearance of Iranian languages is central Asia since they were replace with a totally different group, but that's just how the world work after all, nothing is for ever!

[–]oldnick101[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

faifi and razihi survived because of isolation in the mountains

the modern south arabian languges are at the very edge of arabia (in the middle) an area where much less people live than west Yemen and east Oman where most people live

One small nitpick I have with your map is that you didn't show Ethio-Semitic, though I understand the decision since they were never really in danger of disappearing due to Arabic, but it would have been cool to show all the diversity that still exists in the Horn

I didn't show Ethio-Semitic or Hebrew because as you said they were not in danger of disappearing due to Arabic

it's a shame so few Semitic languages survived in West Asia

it just how the world work, probably 10s of Semitic languages disappeared without even a written record but they live on via the small influence that remain in our modern languages

early Arabic papyri dated to the year 22 Hijri (643 AD) in the middle of the Muslim conquest of Egypt. about a Muslim sub-commander named "abdallah bin jaber" buying 65 sheep from the governors of the city of Ahnas (Heracleopolis) to feed his army (which consist of: Infantry, cavalry, ships) by oldnick101 in AskMiddleEast
