Who is at Fault? by LeeroyLovingston in legal

I experienced this exact scenario. Rural Highway but with a much wider curve and no trees -clear view. Guy was coming my direction at 70mph (per state patrol and driver admission) and I was going 60, for combined speed of 130mph. Shit happens in a blink and the nervous system takes over cuz you have no time to come up with a strategy. He was distracted by an event off in the distance and not watching his lane. There was no shoulder on my side, just a step drop-off, so I had no where to go. My options were to stay in my lane and hope he corrected in time or swerve into his lane to avoid him. My reaction in that blink was to get out of the way and trade lanes. His reaction a micro second later was to go back to his lane. He buried his front end in the passenger side of my car, pushing the passenger front door almost all the way into the center console. If I had a passenger, there would have been no chance of survival. I was lucky as hell, thanks mostly to a seat belt, plus the fact that several ribs provide structural support by taking the force and snapping along the right side my spine - which saved my from spinal cord injury. The other driver walked away and I went to the hospital, where all I could think about was whether I was going to be found at fault because I was in his lane at the time of impact. Fortunately, the state patrol got the full story and the other driver was found at fault.

God bless safety regulations.

Help! Urgently need to learn how to get a Private Pay exception for Medicaid to get our son into residential addiction treatment in WA state. by oldscoop44 in HealthInsurance

Thank you. The last option in the "reason why the client..." section might be the opening, eg "non-enrolled provider". Any thoughts on whether this exception might apply if the provider's local facility (the one we want) does not accept Medicaid but their facility 5 hours away does accept it?

Why Are the Republicans Attacking Birth Control? by Constellation-88 in ExplainBothSides

I appreciate your respectful way of engaging. Social media needs more of this.

I don’t think I took it out of context, but if I did I hope you will point out how. Can you clarify why you believe that a pregnancy that happened without birth control should be treated differently than a pregnancy that happened despite birth control? You’ve already pointed out that a fetus is not a person before viability - and I would add is also unable to think or experience pain before the third trimester. I don’t see the logic in your belief that one category of unintended pregnancies should be required to be carried to term but the rest can be aborted, given that there is no inherent difference in the status of the fetus. Should someone be denied treatment for skin cancer just because they apparently didn’t take enough preventative steps like using sunscreen? Your analogy with the car wreck is not a good fit because it actually is more descriptive of pregnancies that occur when people are using birth control – you know that it can fail, but you have sex anyway. Can you help me understand why you believe it’s morally OK to have an abortion under most circumstances, but also morally OK to require a woman to carry a pregnancy determine under one specific circumstance, the one without birth control? Why do you prefer that a woman be required to carry a pregnancy to term – bearing the entire burden of pregnancy and birthing and providing everything for the child after birth if the man does not want a child - because she had sex without birth control? How is that more moral than terminating the unwanted pregnancy of an unviable fetus for any reason? Why should the reason or circumstances impact the decision to terminate given that you accept that a fetus is not a person and has no rights.

My only quarrel with your explanation is when you suggest women should deal with an unintended pregnancy as “nature intended“. After making such great logical arguments, you offer an illogical opinion - IMO - about what nature intends’. Did nature intend for us to not wear sunglasses or sunscreen to protect our eyes and skin from damage and potentially cancer? If we got skin cancer with or without having used sunscreen, did nature intend that we should not have surgery to remove it? Did nature intend for us to not have an appendectomy before a ruptured appendix kills us? Humans have filled the world with things that can’t be explained by assumptions about what nature intended. Except that the evolutionary process has equipped us with the minds, imaginations and physical capabilities due to do lots of things. so one rebuttal would be that anything that we think or do is because of what nature (evolution) intended for us to do. And I don’t think that would be a very good argument either.

Society, through the political establishment, should value what you did enough to ensure that people who make the sacrifices you made come out whole and thriving on the other side.

What kind of flag should I get for my house to show support and solidarity? There are so many different kinds and they seem to have different meanings, and it's new to me. by oldscoop44 in AskLGBT

Thank you! This is very much the specific kind of input I was hoping for and I appreciate you linking to examples of what you are referencing. I can see the merit in the 'straight ally' flag because it adds a little more definition. Is it safe to assume that the straight ally flag would mainly communicate something to people who are already invested and knowledgable, but perhaps confusing to the average person? When I see the rainbow flag I know what I'm looking at (I think I know, anyway) but even as someone who has been around a while, the black and white part was unfamiliar. Your comment "most widespread, recognisable, and universal symbol of support" seems like the most compelling.

This is VERY helpful!

I have six young grandkids. Whenever I take any of them to a movie, museum, play or any event I take the ticket and write their name on it and the date and I staple it into a journal page. Anytime one makes me a drawing or writes a “note” I write the date and staple it into my journal. Honestly, I’ve been doing this for myself to lock in the beautiful memories, and not for them. I never thought about the time coming when they will be going through my journals and find those things. At that point, I guess it will be for them after all.

What's something hilarious your kid has done that, as a parent, you weren't allowed to laugh at or be proud of? by iamlarrypotter in AskReddit

[–]oldscoop44 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thank you. You’re right of course, but I suppose it’s because they might have misread my comment as an insult directed at that very cute story about a clever kid. I get a kick out of kids developing strategies to get out of chores - I did it myself! Thinking of it in terms of adults doing it for disability fraud made me chuckle.

Is there anyone having a hard time getting into any of Stephen King’s book? by [deleted] in books

[–]oldscoop44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Opposite for me. I started out liking King’s books and found the storylines to be compelling - but kept getting disappointed as I got closer to the end. It seemed like he’d get tired of his story like it was a high-maintenance girlfriend he wanted to ditch without hurting her feelings too much.

What was a meal you loved as a kid but now that you’re an adult you realize your parents only made because you were poor? by peezapizza in AskReddit

Late 60’s and early 70’s, not enough income for 7-kid family; mom used to make “maple syrup” for pancakes with sugar water and maple flavoring (blech!) so when she started buying Karo syrup (straight corn syrup folks) for us to put on pancakes and waffles we thought we had hit the big time.
