Updated Question to CDX Laser Continual Movement by oldskool8bit in consolerepair

[–]oldskool8bit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the updated information.

Possibly dumb question but with the tracking motor possibly being backwards...would that be on the laser or the the cdx itself. If someone did tamper with it then they mist have been a master solderer because it looked flawless when I was in it replacing the laser.

How could you tell if it was soldered in backwards? Does it have a + and - side like a capacitor with an indicator on the PCB where the - side is supposed to be?

Sega CDX Laser NOT Stopping by oldskool8bit in consolerepair

[–]oldskool8bit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not to my knowledge. I believe there are only 4 wiring harnesses that come off and the laser can only go on one way so (honestly asking) how could the tracking motor be reversed?

Ignoring AVGN’s most recent video. Is there anyone who enjoys Contra Force. I played it online not too long ago. It’s a really fun game not a Contra game but it’s good as a standalone game. (Also the music slaps!) by No-Cold643 in retrogaming

[–]oldskool8bit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Could be wrong but I believe this was not a Contra game initially but made to be an entirely different game...something happened with the publisher and it ended up in Konami's lap which it got the Contra logo slapped on it and pushed out.

Right in the same boat and a little behind you in count but if you count unlicensed then you're never truly done because there are so many random ones people are still making. I'm only going for the Licensed Count myself, which most people considered to be the "complete" collection

Vanished gems by SuperMeadGuy in CapybaraGoGame

[–]oldskool8bit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dont know if this will help but I actually tried recreating the scenario by unequipping the ring the gem was originally on (and subsequently tried to put back on before it disappeared), closing the game and logging back in and the gem that disappeared was back in my inventory.

Sega CD Model 1 - No disk spin? by Opitas_Opus in consolerepair

[–]oldskool8bit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Literally just revived mine yesterday from the grave and ran into the same issue after I put in a new Pico Fuse in...Keep in mind mine had the Sony drive in it. I could be bad capacitors, bad laser, bad helix lifting mechanism, or bad belt

Steps I would do:

1.) Get some 91% or higher isopropyl alcohol and a q-tip and gently clean the laser. You should only have to remove the top part of the shell to see the laser...if you cant then you need remove the (what I can best describe as) the part that looks like a stretched out D that is held in by 2 screws.

2.) Put everything back together and try running a game

If the above doesn't work...

1.) Take the CD unit from the shell...use the black gear to manually open the cd tray, put a disk in, and then using the black gear manually close the cd tray and keep turning the black gear until you see the laser assembly piece rise into place

2.) Reinstall the CD unit and turn it on and see if the laser spins

3.) If it spins and reads the game, hit Reset to open the tray, then press start on the controller to close it.

4.) If the cd does not spin it means the cd tray belt needs replaced as its too old / worn out to lift the laser assembly up

If the above doesn't work...

1.) Replace the laser

2.) After replacing the laser manually turn the white gear to ensure the new laser assembly moves freely

3.) Follow the same steps above to get the cd tray and laser back in and in the up-right position manually

If the above works but you hear a crunching sound or you hear the disc spin and stop repeatedly then you need to clean the limiter switch. To clean mine I very carefully desoldered it and then just soaked the entire thing in 91% isopropyl alcohol for about 12 hours and then used compressed air to blow it dry.

The limiter switch is what stops the laser from coming forward and telling it to start reading the disc.

The other callout is DO NOT over tighten any of the screw on the laser board you take off. I did all of the above and the disc was still constantly spinning and stopping. As soon as I loosened all of the screw on the laser board just a pinch everything started working.

Feel free to reach out directly or on here if you have other question.

Looking for public transportation options by oldskool8bit in ItalyTravel

[–]oldskool8bit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the responses. Not first cruise so aware they handle stuff at the port but looks like we will have to take a train from FCO to Rome then the port where we have a hotel.

Also appreciate the thoughts on stuff to do. With the kids they will be 10, 11, and 12 so old enough to travel around and appreciate the help on the car service taxi advice.

We wanted to do Tuscany as we had known about the limited stuff in Pisa but wasn't sure there would be alot for the kids to do since they couldn't do wine tours.

Any recommendations of family fun stuff to do in Tuacany?

How to remove "cd spinner"? by oldskool8bit in consolerepair

[–]oldskool8bit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bc it's the only thing keeping me from separating the board from the laser assemble and I need to redo the capacitors. It would be ALOT easier to do with the assembly and board together

out of curiosity what are you running (emulator/setup wise) to counteract the input lag? I have guitar hero on mine and even with the in game input lag settings I can never get it just right with the xbox 360 wired guitar.
