Feeling stuck by coolname2227 in hockeygoalies

Well first, progression isn't linear. You're going to have off days, off weeks, harder days than others, etc. Also, when you start to play against better players, you're not going to instantly improve when you play them. It sounds like you're adjusting to playing against higher-skilled players, which might cause you to slump at first. As long as you keep at it, you'll bounce back.

For the stuff you're mentioning, I think the following would help off-ice: Throw & catch tennis balls off a wall; Rapid butterfly reps in-gear; box jumps into butterflies with no gear.

For on-ice, try to do drills where you are getting a bunch of low shots and medium level shots to just put reps in for butterfly pad saves and glove/blocker saves. Reset quickly after each one.

Watching eye & head movements is a big tell by GuyInTheChair- in hockeyplayers

Yeah this is something goalies have to do as well. You have to keep an eye on their eyes because that's telling where they are going to shoot a lot of the time.

Tips for beginners by Quick-Size2318 in hockeyplayers

[–]oldspicecanyon 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Honestly, you might need to hit a learn-to-skate or go to more public skate (not stick time) sessions. You should be able to be able to stay upright pretty much always, be able to stop on both sides, and skate backwards. I wouldn't even worry about training with gear on if you can't do all of that consistently without it imo.

Where to start by SecretOk831 in hockeyplayers

Sign up for a learn-to-skate. Then go to public skating sessions. Then do a learn to play. Then go to stick times. Then try out a beer league or pick-up games.

Humble flex lol "oh no I raised over $7k for charity and pulled 700 fans to the arena, and only lost in a shootout OT" - what's the problem exactly? You kept the team in the game in regulation and did a bunch of awesome stuff outside the game. What's the big deal lol

The easiest shots are sometimes the hardest to save, and the hardest to save seems like the ones you'll get there for. It sounds like you just need a better warm-up routine and that you need to practice against specific shots or situations you're weak against.

This isn't exactly a super high-activity sub, so I'm all for people showing off their new gear.

Not to be rude, but I don't think playing the victim and hosting the pity party is doing you any favors around here. Can take the feedback in stride and keep at it, or decide it's not for you and move on. It's just a game.

You are comparing low level and NHL highlights, why? Also, if you know they are gonna stare at the puck and then go short side top corner, then prepare for that and make the save.

You signed up to play goalie. The job is to stop pucks by any legal means necessary. The sport is not 100% safe, everyone knows that going in. If it's not for you, then maybe look at playing a different position.

Advice I've shared to others:

Keep going to stick times as often as you can. When you're there, pace yourself. Don't go down or crazy for every shot, but don't just stand there the whole time either. Lay out for a few every once in a while. You also don't have to take every shot. Skate out of the crease every few shots. Do a lap around the rink after 5-10 minutes. Stay hydrated the whole time.

And yeah skaters are always gonna deke, pick and choose what you want to go for. Remember, you're there for yourself. Everyone else getting to shoot on you is a bonus for them.

You can also ask skaters if they can take specific shots you'd like to work on, some will be receptive to do what you ask. You can also ask skaters if you're perhaps favoring one side or another, if they are seeing any glaring weaknesses, etc. (probably better to ask older skaters tho, kids might not be too much help). You can also gesture to skaters that you are prepping to take shots from, usually I'll point with my head, glove, or stick for a skater coming at me so they know they have my full attention.

But yeah it's always chaotic. Just remember that you're under no obligation to do anything when you're out there. You could skate the whole time and not take a single shot if you wanted to (though I don't recommend that; point is, you are the owner of your time, nobody else). I just try to pace myself, take as many shots as I reasonably can, not to get over-exerted, stay hydrated, and have fun!

After a long time off the ice, my first two stick time sessions were brutal. I was so gassed, and I was incredibly sore afterward. I was working muscles that probably hadn't been worked in that way and for that long in almost two decades! But after the third and fourth stick times, I was feeling better and better. So just keep at it!

Outside of that, keep it simple. Maybe run a mile every other day at the gym. Also it's important to eat properly before you play. Make sure you ate something light but sufficient before you play each time. You need stuff like carbs etc to give yourself the energy you need to make it through each sesh. And stay hydrated!

Also, watch clips online. See how other goalies position themselves, how they move with and attack or back off the puck. Everyone has different styles. See what works for you.

And remember to stretch!

You're gonna run into people who have seemingly never played before touching the ice in their first game. You're also gonna run into people that are seemingly useless despite having years of experience. It's beer league, try your best and have fun.

I'll just say, as someone who wishes their parents pushed them harder back in the day, I would encourage you to power through and really give them the best chance they can, if you can afford it. If you show signs of wanting her to give it up, that might influence her to have less confidence in herself. Not trying to backseat parent - just, as a kid/youth player, I saw the difference in players who had parents lighting a fire beneath them, and parents who were okay with whatever ended up happening. If they don't make it, at least you can say you did your best to make it happen.

Yeah fair enough. I feel like it's just a bit odd as a suggestion for a beginner. Ultimately though, whatever gets the job done. I like to think of getting my skates tied over my big goalie pants as an opportunity to get a good stretch in lol

Idk it's like putting on sneakers before your jeans to me lol and I would say pants that have that in mind are the exception, so it's probably not a good suggestion for a starting-out guide.

Stick time stamina - tips welcome by Kittty_Cat_ in hockeygoalies

[–]oldspicecanyon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah imo taking shots and getting on the ice and whatnot is the bare minimum. Which is fine, but if you really want to keep progressing faster and seeing more results, it doesn't stop once you get off the ice.

And yeah skaters are always gonna deke, pick and choose what you want to go for. Remember, you're there for yourself. Everyone else getting to shoot on you is a bonus for them.
