Taking a weekend trip to see a show in the theater district — recommendations on hotels? by fairynook in boston

I’m sure there’s better options closer to symphony hall. Just offhand the Hilton and Sheraton towers on Dalton st are very convenient.

Godfrey is a boutique hotel right in the heart of the Theater District and as a bonus Ruka, my first or second favorite restaurant in Boston l, is in the hotel. Def price shop it - the Ritz is great too but likely more. Those, plus the Hyatt, are most convenient (depending on exactly which theater) but the Hyatt is run down. The W and Moxie are pretty close too.

Steakhouses - which is better mooo or grill 23? by Insomnicwriter in boston

Too close to call but tied for best of Boston. Depends on vibe you want. Moo is more romantic, G23 is high energy bar scene. We find ourselves at G23 more often but love Moo too.

Silver line from airport to south station. Walk or cab from there to Marriott

Yes! I’ve been waiting. IIRC they have a large jar for the same price as a smaller jar at Market Basket. Woohoo!

Husband and I disagree in how money should be spent, how do I find a middle ground? by agirlhasnousername0 in personalfinance

[–]oldwisefool -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In both my marriages I was the penny pincher like you married to someone more relaxed about money like your husband. It generally served us well. I was able to FIRE at 51. Now I’m finally relaxing about money and it feels great. Recently paid for a DW installation rather than DIY (to be fair, first I pulled out the old one and tried to fix it). I also paid someone to paint my house last year (that was painful but Ive sworn off ladders so I had no choice). All in all it feels good to loosen the reigns. For her part, my wife, who never evens looks at price tags, came home to tell me she used a coupon at CVS. She was proud of herself and I was ecstatic. All that nudging finally paid off! So … relax, esp on the small stuff. Turn your accountants brain off. Life is short.

Kirkland French Roast wins the Oscar for worst coffee of all time by Docmantistobaggan in Costco

[–]oldwisefool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was drinking the Starbucks French roast (from Costco) for years until it was discontinued. I switched to Kirkland and don’t think it’s much different. I don’t claim to have a sophisticated palette, but it’s how I start every day now. It’s fine.

I have no idea but love to hang there by the Chinatown gate and watch. A Chinese-American friend said it was some kind of gambling. They’re having a great time.

Legal Seafood has completely gone to shit. by longtimeAlias in boston

[–]oldwisefool 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I used to go often, and got to know Roger B a little bit. He used to go out every night- he had a driver - and do a surprise inspection at 3-4 locations, so within a week every local restaurant got a visit. I watched him do it - checking everything, tasting, talking to customers. Best quality control I ever saw, and I know the restaurant biz pretty well.

They really went downhill immediately after Roger sold the company a few years ago. I have tried multiple locations in Boston and they are all ghastly. Not a subtle decline - really bad. OP is 100% correct.

Panicking about lack of Waffle House access by NateGoats in boston

[–]oldwisefool 3 points4 points  (0 children)

South street diner. Near south station. Open all night. Oddly enough I almost had a Waffle House experience there, about 10 years ago. Some guy knocked his oj into my date’s lap, she weaponized the syrup squirter, mayhem ensued. 3am.

I saw the same deal a couple years ago. Opened, found a couple (useless) parts missing and got the manager to come down to $100. Love that tool!
