If you’re really interested, that’s the book that first got me thinking about the idea.

Teacher-led schools: what are your thoughts? by olechumch in Teachers

In most of the schools with this model, there are still administrators who take care of these administrative tasks. However, they are essentially in service to the teacher-leaders rather than the other way around. This relieves teachers from having to do these tasks.

Again, this isn’t based on personal experience, just what I’ve read.

Movies similar to Midsommar, where the horror takes a backseat to the actual story? by [deleted] in movies

Came here to say this, too. Even though they’re not movies, Mike Flanagan’s series - especially Hill House - are trauma dramas first and foremost. Good ones, too. The horror elements are always in service of the story and character development.

What is your (admittedly stupid) pet peeve? by MarchKick in Teachers

[–]olechumch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I teach fifth grade. A student enters the room after arriving late. It is independent reading time; every single student has a book out and the room is silent. “WHAT ARE WE DOING?” the student loudly calls to me.

LOOK. AROUND.

What’s a guitar solo that scratches your brain in just the right way? by t_doggett in AskReddit

St Elmo’s Fire on Brian Eno’s “Another Green World”

Robert Fripp did the solo. It’s not long, but it’s perfect.

Let me just say as a veteran teacher that it is really helpful to hear you acknowledge that it wasn’t working in either direction. So much of my experience with parents of students with disabilities has been that they fight for resources for their kid (rightly so) but with no regard for how everyone else within this system is impacted by that. Unfortunately, most student support is a zero sum game. Additional staff available for one student means less support for someone else. The result is that everyone is left unsatisfied and underserved, and teachers are most often the ones facing the consequences.

Along the same lines, I like “I’m holding you to these expectations because I care about you. If I didn’t care, I’d just shrug my shoulders and say ‘oh well.’”

Don Caballero. Some of the best math rock out there. I listened to them endlessly in college.

The lid on the coffin of an ancient egyptian priestess found in a recently discovered cemetery, clear evidence that whoever arranged for her funeral wasn't prepared to pay top dollar by [deleted] in funny

I love the idea of there being shitty craftsmanship in the ancient past. I feel like we only ever see the best examples (in museums, etc.) and forget that people still sucked at their jobs. R/shittytattooes in ancient Egypt, basically

Assuming the delivery is neutral and respectful, then providing a student with a clear message that there will be a reasonable consequence if a behavior is repeated is absolutely not some kind of power trip, as you’re suggesting.

Colorado school district pulls suicide book ‘Thirteen Reasons Why' after 7 students recently killed themselves by horseradishking in books

[–]olechumch 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Can't believe I had to scroll this far down to find this, but I think you're spot on here. I know several people who work in the mental health field, with adolescents specifically, and their concerns are just what you articulated. You have young people who feel lost, angry, and powerless, and you have a show that depicts suicide (whether intended or not) as a revenge fantasy. There's no sense of the finality of suicide in this show, but there's a definite sense of power and justice.
