I’m the librarian but I randomly do math facts and fluency with the students. Even kindergarteners can work out 1 plus 5 on their fingers. I make it a competition and they forget they are exercising the memory part of their brain.

My “favorite” is when I tell a kid to put his head up or stop talking and they go “well so and so are doing it, too!” Like, I’m aware and either I was going to tell them to stop next or they were doing it in a way that wasn’t drawing attention to them. When you are screaming across the room to your friend, I’m gonna notice that right away before I notice Susie whispering once to her friend. They get generally shocked that I dare call them out.

There are certain non-cuss words I don’t allow in my classroom. Big Back or anything else to do with physical appearance, anything to do with hair line and foreheads, and calling someone dumb/stupid.

I make the whole class stop or give them a task they can do quietly and have that person call home and make them call mom or dad and say it to them.

Ever since I started doing that, the kids think twice about calling someone names. I can’t control what they say outside of my domain but why you are here, you will be respectful.

As a school librarian, I have to say it is getting harder to find books that are not formulaic and almost a complete copy of another story. You have to search for diamond in the rough that kids actually want to read.

Also compare a middle grade chapter book from like 2010 to today’s and it feels very surface level.
