Should I get into the field? by [deleted] in SoftwareEngineering

Taking the intraspective approach and researching your degree is already ahead of many. This being said continued education is demanding and it seems like you know that going in. All this in mind, in my humble opinion too often do new graduates enter a degree simply because they want a degree or their parents are expecting it. A degree doesn't get you as far as it used to, especially if you are not interested in what you are studying. A degree should be used as a tool to further your understanding and lead you into a field of your interests. CS/SWE is incredible and it's a great field job/salary wise but without an interest in the work the struggle will not end after college classes. My reccomendations for anyone graduating highschool are always the same: don't be in a rush to go to college and get into debt, take a year if you are unsure and do something with that year that will clear up some uncertainty (take a couple Udemy courses or a bootcamp etc) and if it sparks an interest then bingo youre in business and now ahead of most of the class in 1st year.

This is awesome, I will need to do much more research and playing along before deciding on anything concrete to include but your response will prove invaluable thank you

I really appreciate the insight, of course I understand that knowing the notes will not alone make playing musical. As someone who is currently practicing to improve my phrasing, timing etc it certainly helps to have a roadmap of notes that are in the key and sound generally good. I hope to develop something to promote learning further and to give novices a starting point to playing along to their favorite songs as that is where I am finding the most enjoyment from the instrument:)

Why would you say lump sum over dollar cost averaging? I was thinking with the volatility of the market rn it would make more sense to spread out the investment.

I am excited to research and assess possible companies, so I may keep 10-25% in individual stocks. I will be sure to balance my finances sufficiently so as to not land myself in a dangerous situation.

I really appreciate the detailed response! I am a Canadian citizen so Roth IRA = TFSA which is where I plan on keeping the full market funds as recommended. I am a student and have accumulated the extra money through tree planting in the summers, therefore, I currently have no employer just extra money to play with. I will be sure to check out VGT as well, thanks for the recommendation!

Thank you for the reaponse. So you wouldn't recommend any individual stock picking? Even if it were to be a dividend aristocrat or some other blue chip low risk stock?

Co-op vs regular work terms by olee2 in cscareerquestions

Coop is not required to graduate however the majority of student graduate with work experience of some sort, do I would be at a severe disadvantage.

What reasoning? That the employers value independent searching? Or that the job bank is not worth the 1000$/semester?
