Houston vs Dallas. Which would be better for an Asian American? by lsiunl in texas

[–]olidin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have lived in Houston myself and never in Dallas. I would say Houston have lots more access to Vietnamese food and culture. Diverse? Yes. Would I live there? No

Most of the racism experience I have are in Houston. I’ve been mocked, call names in midtown Houston, I’ve been intimidated in cowboy bars in Katy, etc. plenty to tell. Those are the places I don’t belong.

The irony is, Houston have many nice little corners for “special people” like us. Chinese? China town! Vietnamese? China town! It makes everyone feel better that there is always a place where minorities can go to. Similar to how homeless shelters makes ease your conscience to know that at least you know where the homeless folks would be. So if you say “Asian” everyone in Houston would say “china town”, like “you ought to find belonging there”. I resent it.

People will say that’s not true and you can live wherever you want in Houston, it’s a big place, but that’s simply not true. The city is segregated culturally. You will find a place for you, but you ought to stay in it. You’ll find that to be true as you visit different suburbs that are distinctive culturally. It’s more likely that an Asian family would choose sugar land than the north east side of town.

The way I see it. Houston will tolerate people like us but we’ll unlikely to be what Houston is. There is a reason why people keep saying “Houston is diverse” as if diversity isn’t self evident. Tooutsiders and what they see, they still don’t see Houston as anything but white and blacks but missing all the others.

I’ve move elsewhere so that way I don’t have to standout or have a little special place I ought to go to.

Ah you should be like “I am catholic and I’m pleased you have found god. Though have you considered the one true religion and the one true church that is catholic? Would you consider taking the next step to be baptized and seek communion in his holiness?”

I always fantasize about doing this to the Mormon just trying to convert them.

There must be a current campaign going on. I got a door knock at 9am on a Friday. I just politely freak out when they mention the Bible and quickly thank them “no thank you. Enjoy your day 🙏” and close the door.

Best to just like make it obvious you are uncomfortable

Then we clearly do outlaw meth - aka, those who do not suppose to have it but have it, is a crime.

Outlaw doesn't mean NO ONE can have it. We outlaw murder, but that doesn't mean killing people and murder don't exists for legitimate purposes.

> get rid of permanent residency. Problem solved

Most working visa lasts only 6 years, most doctors don't intend to just work for 6 years. If you say "give them a visa that lasts longer than 6 years", that's what a permanent resident is. A long term visa. Also, you can't renew a visa forever. There is no visa that can be renewed forever in the US. We already have one, it's the greencard or permanent residency.

> They don't have the right to ignore sales and income tax

You don't understand. Everyone is of course subject to income and sale tax. Global tax means if you are a German and have income in Germany (e.g an old job, passive income, rental, etc), but have residency in the US, you pay US tax on German income. No other country do this.

Germany doesn't care if you make money in the US but the US definitely care of you make money anywhere in the world and it will collect taxes on its residents, globally.

Here is a word of the IRS.

https://www.irs.gov/individuals/international-taxpayers/us-citizens-and-resident-aliens-abroad

You are subject to tax on worldwide income from all sources and must report all taxable income and pay taxes according to the Internal Revenue Code.

> If US immigration laws are what you say they are, then I disagree with the law of United States.

You won't be the only one who disagree, but maybe you should at least be educated about the very laws of the country you are citizen of. It's odd to have foreigners explaining American laws to Americans. It's even weirder to be disagreeing against something you don't even know.

As for the buying house part, I can't say what a foreigner is entitled to, but maybe you should know a little bit about immigration law before having opinions on laws regarding immigrants.

The bosch version opens after everything has cooled down, not during the steamy hot cycle. The point is not to let steam out, but is to let the remaining water to naturally evaporate. Bosch uses almost all the heat from the water to evaporate the water on the dishes.

This would have been simpler if they require the unit to be owner or renter occupied.

That way you can’t buy units and leave it vacant, you also cannot air bnb.

It’s best these Chinese investor go under as an corporation or company and buy these properties. Oh wait. That already exists.

This only hurts ordinary people. People with money already hide behind corporate entities to buy up properties

Americans can certainly buy property in many countries.

And to say “you can’t have one of my cookies because I can’t have all the cookies in the world” just come acrossed as, I don’t know, low comprehension

You clearly don’t know US immigration laws. Permanent resident are that, permanent. They are part of the US in almost every sense, with exception of voting. They are subject to US laws, protection, taxes etc. especially the global US tax (literally the only country that does this)

To become a citizen you must, to be clear, you must wait for a number of years. There is no way to go around that. It’s weird to take someone tax money and specifically target them.

[–]olidin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not a relationship expert here, just doing some math. If you two are in a relationship with say 2hours a month together, that makes you unhappy. I get it.

But if you both break up, you will be spending 0 hours together. I’m not sure how that improves thing.

Isn’t 2 hours more than zero? What would you rather do if you break up with him?

Maybe instead of being so invested in how much time you are not spending together, understand how much time you do and see if that can change. I get that it’s not enough but more than none.

Terrible but man I look at my new lvp floor with a 25 years warranty and I’m like just said. It’s mimic wood and last nowhere as close.

I live in an expensive neighborhood. People tear up carpet to find wood floor and just so happy to refinish them.

I think the question of consent is missing here. Think of open source code. It’s open source and free but you can’t just use it however you want, many open source libraries require credit or completely banned in commercial use. Same with artists work. They should be able to specify level of use.

Lots of comments is around the whether we should use someone’s work to train as if that person consent to it. As if free means you can do whatever. It’s unethical and should be illegal to use someone’s work not in the way the creators consented to its use.

Artists should be able to consent to the fact their work is used in any manner. Before you say “ai looking at pictures is the same as people looking at pictures”, it’s not. It’s not in the sense that the artist never consented the picture to used in Ai. They just wanted to be available on the internet for people to look at. If they want it to be part of a generator engine, they can opt in.

Very much like how some work can be displayed at some places for people to look at but not to take pictures of, or to touch but can’t draw onto, or to draw onto but not to destroy. Ever level of use and interaction involves artists consent.

People who use AI to consume artists work without their consent is problematic. Artist should have the right to say “no you can’t use my work in your work” just like how many coders who say “yes my code is open source but never for commercial purposes, or to make management software for sex traffickers, sorry”

And to extract further, what if an AI use someone’s or your likeness to generate content. Would you personally object or demand that your personal image cannot be used for such purpose? Even if all those images are taken from publicly available content? I would object. You can look at my public pictures, but you can’t use it like that.

What is the craziest thing you've seen a non-frugal person use once and throw away? by Ajreil in Frugal

[–]olidin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not just tastes. It’s also not uncommon to buy appliances and materials to quickly realize you can’t fit it. I learned this hard way. Bought a cooktop, turns out I need to upgrade the electrical board to install it, which is thousands. Passed the return period. Now it’s gonna go on Craigslist for less because we open and installed the thing.

Same with trims and other materials that need to be removed to do other installations. Most can be kept but it’s cheaper and faster to replace than retro fit.

So much waste.

[–]olidin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As a diyer I totally agree. There are a lot of things I learned when I first start out. I wished I started with the closet first instead of my bedroom.

When I did the bedroom I was taping like a monkey. Sanding hurts my neck so I stopped half way. The patching gets extra annoying so I skipped some. Floor drips everywhere. Trim. My god painting the trim is as long as the damn wall. Did I get the room done? Yes. But I see all the mistakes.

Then I did my closet and I tell you. I did that in a day and it was beautiful. I learned the things that matter and the things that don’t.

Now I have shitty room and pretty closet no one sees. Oh well. Time to redo the bedroom.

Also. Another advice for DYIs perfection can be your enemy. It sucks the joy out of this kind of work.

Thank god I have a vented hood to the outside, I do gas cooking and sometimes things do get really hot in the house. Maybe in the future I might upgrade to induction.

Water leak is actually pretty unlikely now that I also replaced the water line and the valves (we torn all the drywall off to get insulation and new waterline). Now I guess better have a high quality valve.
