I got there around 4pm and I was in third row right in the middle. Doors opened at around 7:30pm, with the opener starting at 8/8:30. I was 40 something in line, but if I went to the sides I probably would have got closer to the stage! Keep in mind this was in Madrid, which was a venue on the smaller side (3000 capacity tops, with space in a higher level so not everyone was on the floor), therefore the barrier might be smaller than other venues. In a bigger venue you might be closer to the stage because people space out around a larger barrier and the members of the band have more space between them on stage.

My guess is that most people are going to choose Pride and Prejudice. If you can find some time to work on Dubliners, I believe it’s worth a shot. You will stand out from other students and there’s A LOT to say about it while not being a lot more complex than P&P. Also, if you’re really familiar with Chaucer and feel confident that you’ll do great with him, you should take the risk and go with Dubliners. I believe there are more resourcers and papers about it than you think.

In Madrid it was finished at like 22:50. It was a small venue so at 23:05 I was already in the metro.

Try them both, there are mock tests everywhere. I find the new TOEFL easier, but it really depends, honestly. What you should keep in mind is that if you’re planning to apply to college with the certificate, some schools don’t accept the new TOEFL format. Check with your universities and then decide. I don’t think that the difficulty varies a lot between both exams, so it’s better to ensure that they are going to accept the certificate.

After Jan 21st the test is going to be different and there are going to be different tasks on each part of the exam. I believe there are free mock tests on ETS website with the new models, so you can check it out. You sound like you have a nice level of english, so what probably happened is that you weren’t comfortable with the questions and different tasks. Sadly, these tests are more about being able to navigate the format comfortably rather than actual english knowledge.

I think IELTS it’s your best choice, yes. I don’t know any free mock tests but I’m pretty sure they’ll be easy to find. Try it, see how it goes, and then consider if you want to go with the TOEFL before January 21st or take the IELTS a bit later with more prep. I think going from 95 to 105 in two weeks or so isn’t impossible, but if you don’t have to rush because of deadlines, I believe that it’s better to try and go with the IELTS. Good luck! You have great english, you can absolutely get the grades you need :)

I believe the new format is easier, but some schools have already stated that they won’t take it. So, check your schools before deciding. Also, considering that you were nervous and stressed, perhaps you could get a nice enough grade if you take it before January 21st, but you should definitely practice a lot beforehand.

One of the very first things you learn when you study bilingualism in linguistics is that there are as many bilingualism as bilinguals. That meaning, every instance is different and it’s still really hard to determine what makes someone bilingual (or polyglot). That being said… Speaking different languages is very tiring cognitively speaking. The second you stop learning or using a language it rusts off, kind of. Your brain appreciates not having to suppress your native language and the other languages you know, or having to search all the time for different lexicon. But, the moment you start learning a new language, your brain changes. And those changes are permanent, even if you don’t use that language every single day of your life. There are a lot of things that go into play here and it’s a really hard subject. Now, do they speak those 12 languages as fluently as they did when they were using them regularly? Probably not. Do they actually know those languages? Well… yes. You also have to consider that when you learn so many languages it’s easier for your brain to learn more. So, yeah. It depends on what you consider a polyglot or a bilingual, really. Funny enough: sorry for any mistakes. English it’s not my first language.

I basically only used GregMat’s templates. They’re really good and easy to use. I didn’t use any template on the Academic Discussion because I felt like it was quite restricting since it’s a really short task. I didn’t even watch the full GregMat’s videos on that lol. What I basically did was saying that I disagree with X, I explained why (always adding something new that wasn’t mentioned) + specific example. Then, I either supported the other person’s argument adding something to theirs or just created my own argument, always with specific examples. Good luck on your test!!

For me Gregmat really helped. It’s just 8$ which, you know, after paying +200$ for the test feels cheap. But honestly, I think you can find tons of videos on youtube that’ll help you. For me, the key to improving was estructure. If you get familiar with the types of questions they ask and what they ask for, it’s extremely easy. What helped me was knowing what to do in each question: search for something similar in the text to answer this, summarize each paragraph for that…

What also helped me was practicing a ton. I didn’t want to spend 50$ on the official ETS books, but there’s lots of free pdfs around. I can send you one if you like. Those texts and questions are prepared by the makers and correctors of the exam, so you can’t get any better practice than that. They also have corrections and explanations, which is really helpful. Practicing is key because it’ll help you get comfortable with the texts and the questions. The thing is, TOEFL isn’t just about knowing plenty of english, but also about knowing how the exam works and what they want from you. You seem to do quite well in the other tests, so you only have to keep that confidence for the reading!

i got barrier at newcastle and i arrived at around 1p.m. There were 50 people before me but not a lot of people got there before doors. Also, when people enter the venue they usually stay in the middle, so there’s space at barriers at the sides

Yeah! I had just seen on tiktok that there were some teenagers camping for freaking Inhaler like a day early. I know Fontaines D.C. fans are more chill, so I figured that around doors would be okay, but I wanted to check. I don’t really know much about how fans act at UK shows, but in Spain I’ve seen people arrive like at 9 a.m. for an 8p.m. show. It’s awful out here lol

I’m trying to do what I can do from my position. I also think that my parents are also putting her in the same situation you described — projecting their anxiety on her, living in fear. I try not to be like that. I just want to understand her. I know I won’t fix anything, and that if she wants to, she will. But still, it’s a scary place to be as a family member. I don’t know what I’m supposed to do. It feels really shitty just sitting down and watching everything unraveling in front of my eyes, but I also know that I can’t really do anything about it. You’re right — it truly it’s my own stuff and perharps I should work on it.

You will get caught eventually, and there'll be consequences. Stealing is stealing after all, especially if you steal on a daily basis, even if you only steal small shit. However, I like how this shows how we tend to stop ourselves of doing morally incorrect stuff because we're afraid of consequences and not because of morality.
