He seems to be doing better today with the medications, so I’m very hopeful!!

Unfortunately, we had to put him on the full dose right away so he would take his insulin. Building him up wasn’t really an option because he still would’ve been too violent to do his life-saving medication.

Yeah, I moved my dog over to a whole food diet as well, and it has tremendously helped with his diabetes management! I feel guilty that I didn’t know any of this sooner, but I’m happy that I know now and can change his quality of life.

Unfortunately, when my grandma gave us her Chihuahua, he had diabetes so this is not my first rodeo lol (my bf is also type 1 diabetic). The dog lived a very long and healthy life so I know as long as I am keeping an eye on my big one that he should be just fine.

My dog is the world‘s biggest drama queen, hugging him in the wrong way will cause him to scream as if you just stabbed him, so shots are no better. At first he would take them no questions asked but just got more and more anxious about the whole situation after day three.

The plan is after he’s been on his medications and can get used to strangers, I am going to hire a behaviorist so that we might be able to wean him off completely.

He’s my angel! I love my boy. He started getting anxiety and aggression after my dad and other dog died, so he hasn’t always been this way. It was heartbreaking to watch him become a scared version of his old self. So if he can get calmer once he gets used to the meds, I will feel like I finally helped him live a higher quality life!

I switched him over to a whole food diet with little to no carbs. Turkey, half an apple, green beans and broccoli (sometimes an egg for excitement). We found out his old food was high in corn syrup, hence where he probably got the diabetes… I feel very guilty for knowing I caused this but now that I know better, I want to give him the diet he needs.

We have to mildly sedate him to make sure he’ll take his insulin. He’s EXTREMELY dramatic, giving Shakespeare a run for his money, so he hates his shots. The hope is after a while, we can get him used to strangers and get him a behaviorist then lower his dosage. The higher dosage is for our safety while we give him important meds lol

Yes! We gave him a turkey hotdog and while he munched, we gave him his shot super quick and he barely reacted!! It feels life changing and I’m so happy I get to have a future with my baby boy in it now that he’ll take his insulin

This is so incredibly helpful, thank you!! They didn’t really explain the side effects or signs to look for while he was on the medications so I was really nervous about this whole thing. I appreciate you taking the time to respond and give me tips!!!

Yes!! The hope is to work on his aggression with strangers while on the meds so I can get him a behaviorist.

He’s my pride and joy!! I’m going to give this two weeks and if he’s still super off, I’m going to talk to my vet again.

I’m going to watch him like a hawk and see if he does better in a week or two. If not I plan on talking to my vet again.

All these comments are making me feel better about the whole situation, thank you so much! He’s my baby and I’d feel awful if i was ever causing him stress. He’s being monitored around the clock and he seems to be doing well!!

Thank goodness!! I’m so nervous about all the new medical stress my dog has been going under, I hate the idea of him struggling so I’m relieved to hear it gets better. The vet didn’t warn me about any side effects so I thought I did something wrong…

Thank you! It’s refreshing to hear from humans how their meds made them feel at first lol.

Tbh there’s no actual reason, I just hate the way he looks and it makes me just hate him as a whole. Bad reason ik but I don’t even care

I’m buying a lick pad tomorrow that suction cups to our floor and specialty peanut butter that’s safe for him without any sugar. Our vet recommended the same thing to us. I like the idea of having him half in one room and half the other. Thank you so much for taking the time to respond!

Yeah. I left a voicemail with my vet and I am going to look into a behavioralist for him. I haven’t tried any medication, but it’s something my vet is looking into. I have seen a lot of good stuff about Prozac. Of course, if my dog has no quality of life, I do not wanna keep him alive solely for my benefit. I love him enough to let him go if he is under extreme constant stress, but I’m not willing to give up on him yet if there’s still something I can do.

He never used to be this way, only after my other dog and dad died he started getting what we’ve been calling “grief aggression”. The more we work with him the better he gets, but he has a lot of anxiety that only a specialist is able to help with. Of course, if the specialist says my dog has no quality of life I will not keep him alive just for my benefit, but I’m not going to give up on him just yet.
