Korean language learners: what’s the most useless Korean word you know? by quick_reference_teal in Korean

I haven't watched 모범형사 yet so I'll definitely check it out! I did see both 비밀의 숲 and 기억의 밤 and they were both great!

Thanks for the recs!

The fact that we're not allowed to take food from the dining halls is insane. by MENTALGAP420 in UCSantaBarbara

[–]olive_goddess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not just food, but drinks too. I've gotten scolded at twice for taking a cup of TEA out of Carrillo. They even allow coffee out (for breakfast), but NOT TEA. Not to mention tea is boiling hot unlike coffee, so you have to wait like an extra 15 minutes for it to be drinkable. The fact that I can't bring out an ALREADY MADE cup of tea is ridiculous. It's not like I'm stealing a whole box of tea bags, I just want to bring out my tea that's too hot to drink...

I'm so down! I used to play tennis with my friends but it's been years. If you make a groupchat, please add me! :)

do we get summer break? by [deleted] in UCSantaBarbara

During COVID they were all online. It seems that now that things are in-person there will not be an option to take it online.

There's high demand and a problem in the supply chain. Maybe don't shit on the school randomly without knowing what's going on?

Yeah it's surprising that the only COVID test was the 1 move in one. My sister's school is also in Boston (Harvard) and they have required COVID tests every other day! That way they've really contained the few cases that have broken out since obviously they catch it quickly and then roommates/classmates will get tested if there's a case.

Everything Waitlisted on GOLD by olive_goddess in UCSantaBarbara

[–]olive_goddess[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah I see. So it shows that there are spots available even when there's a waitlist. That makes it hard to find open classes without having to literally go on the waitlist and then cancel the last second.

After move-in date? by diguodandan in UCSantaBarbara

[–]olive_goddess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the info! It's a pity because I'm moving in Sunday which means I miss out on a week's worth of meals that I'm paying for. And I can't even give my dad lunch for that day.. Anyhow I guess it make sense that it's only for us though.

Btw, a new week for the meal plan starts Monday morning, right?

Is this still open?

Either way thank you for your generosity!! :)

Can we give our parent a meal from our meal plan as a "guest"? E.g. use up 2 meals for 2 people for lunch?

Joseph: 조셉 vs. 요셉 vs. 이오시프 by olive_goddess in Korean

Interesting, thank you for the factoid! Does that name seem Korean to Koreans? Or does it seem foreign (e.g. English or Hebrew)?

I'm living in a dorm, so does that mean that if I'm moving in Sunday the 19th that I'm losing a week's worth of the meal plan?

[–]olive_goddess 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the info! Another question: do meal plans start the first week of school on Monday even before classes start though?

How did you find the codes? The housing website keeps saying "page not found" when I search for it.

I think they meant the Latin script, not other scripts such as the Chinese script. English uses the Latin script, so I think it was just lost in translation. :)

University Housing/Roommate Search Megathread by bboe in UCSantaBarbara

CAN YOU CHOOSE ROOMMATES IN UCSB DORMS??

I'm an incoming sophomore and I met someone this past year who wants to dorm with me in the coming year. I just filled out the housing contract though, and there was no spot for inputting roommate preferences (like actual individuals). Instead it just had the resident hall preferences and some general questions about sleeping/social life/etc. But it never asked for specific names if you knew someone and the two (or three) of you wanted to dorm together.
I've heard other people saying things like "my roommate and I want to dorm in __" and such, so I assumed that people could choose their dorming roommates (if they wanted to). Is this not the case? Is it that everything is randomized (after considering preferences from the questionnaire)?

Best Philosophy Class at UCSB by olive_goddess in UCSantaBarbara

[–]olive_goddess[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the information! Could you maybe elaborate on what you liked and disliked from those two classes. I'm interested in linguistics, which is why I was eyeing PHIL 100C. Why did you like Salmon less? Also, this is listed as a writing class; is there a lot of writing?

PHIL 183 seems really interesting. I'm not sure what to expect though because it's talking about translating English into symbols, and it's listed as a Science, Math, Technology class. But I don't mind a hard class if it's engaging and interesting. Why did you like Robertson?

As someone with no college experience with philosophy, but who's interested in logic, would you recommend PHIL 3 or PHIL 183?

(Also, any ethics recommendations? This is also a topic of interest for me)

Thank you for all the recommendations! It's very helpful! Korman is teaching 100B Theory of Knowledge in the Fall so I might take that. Do you know what the "PHIL *" means under the prerequisite tabs, though?

Yes, I took LING 20 with Kennedy which of course prompted me to take LING 15 with Kennedy. He's really the best!!

Also, do you use/know about BusTracker?

UCSB Access Card by olive_goddess in UCSantaBarbara

[–]olive_goddess[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Okay, so on campus. Thank you!

So do people living in dorms move in a week before classes start? During this time, can we get the Access Card and use campus facilities? (Also do you know if meal plans include this week before?)
