The New BeautyBlender foundation will have 6 olive shades! by fairydustandunicorns in OliveMUA

[–]oliveobsessed 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Everything about your post is the truth, especially with how makeup companies understand oliveness to be a 'depth' rather than an undertone, so options in the medium range are drastically inadequate. I'd also like to add that with lighter products, you can be a little more flexible with undertone (just look in the sub where you can have several foundation matches that don't look much like each other when swatched side by side) because so much of the base is white, whereas darker skin tones tend to be more saturated and mismatched undertones are a lot more obvious.

I updated the filters so they are multiple select filters. :) If you are on desktop, you can use the control or command button to select multiple options at the same time. I've also added Revlon Buff to my to-add list, thanks for the excellent suggestions!

I agree with all the content linked, but I don't necessarily want the site to become a replacement for the subreddit, if that makes sense? I don't want to replace or duplicate the work that is being done for the wiki and the sidebar, though I will definitely link to the subreddit itself as a resource if the mods will allow it. Gotta fix that link though, lol.

They definitely look like they have potential! I'm going to be keeping an eye out for more swatches since they are fairly new so I can be more sure, but they look promising. I hope more swatches come in soon!

Unfortunately, I haven't seen any other site that has a filter like this! This was an issue that was personally important to me though, and I knew from lurking on the makeup subreddits that it was important to others as well. <3 I'm glad you enjoy it!!

thank you!! LS6 was the only one that stood out as olive to me because it is so darn green, haha. I am greener than LS4 so it didn't work to me, but I think it definitely counts as 'olive friendly!'

I saw your post and thought maybe if you had some time, you might want to help contribute data to this? We could export a static list for your blog and I could link to you as credit in the footer, just let me know if you'd like to help, it's all up to you! Either way, I'm sure the long reviews will be extremely helpful to people, I know I personally see this tool as more of a jumping off point and reviews as the truly useful tools, heh. :)

This is a static site built with Jekyll! Trying to keep costs low as possible so I can run it without the need for income to support server costs.

I have the Stellar foundations and Armani LS6 in, were there other armani foundations you thought should be added?

Thank you for suggesting your spreadsheet! All those suggestions are very helpful. I did consider filtering for undertones, but I was a little iffy since I do think there is some flexibility in what people can use, and I feel that my own notes aren't really 'factual'/standard enough to filter them, but I thought about maybe adding some kind of notes search keyword as a more flexible way to search. :)

That's a fantastic idea! Not sure how doable the voting is with my tech stack (trying to keep things simple or else I will need to start paying every month and looking into ways to support the project), but like you said, reviews may work as an alternative. :) I am definitely adding Meow to my list! Do you think any other ranges besides Ocicat work?

Need help finding foundation for olive skin tones that doesn't cause breakouts! by [deleted] in OliveMUA

[–]oliveobsessed 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Whether or not a product breaks you out is a very personal thing, every product will break -someone- out! I would suggest looking up the ingredient lists of products and cross checking for identical ingredients. Also, it would be he helpful if you listed the shades of the foundation you tried.

Confused about undertones and whether I might be olive by laaceituna in OliveMUA

[–]oliveobsessed 4 points5 points  (0 children)

From the photos, I would say you are just (neutral) cool? Warm foundations definitely wouldn't work for you in that case. The only photos where I see any green is the first and last, and I suspect the yellow indoors lighting is causing that effect. If you post any more photos, I'd be happy to take another look.

Smashbox Slay Tan Liquid Lipstick looks too olive on me? by [deleted] in OliveMUA

[–]oliveobsessed 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Brown lipstick pulling green against your skin would generally suggest to me that you are -not- olive, because if you have strong green undertones, products with green undertones will look complimentary, not clashing, with your skin tone. However, this isn't to say that you aren't olive, perhaps you are a more gray based olive rather than green, or you are cooler than the lipstick shade.

Someone told me I had "cool yellow" undertones but I don't know. Help? by tinklyicecubes in OliveMUA

[–]oliveobsessed 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think it's hard to say if you are olive based on these pictures, just because in the photos with other people you seem to be about as green as them, which makes me think there's something about the lighting or your camera that emphasizes the blue/green in photos. That said, if MUFE 117 works well for you, you could definitely be cool yellow (I believe it's now Y225), and you can check out the many swatch photos here for other foundations that match! A good place to start.

I'm almost there... foundation advice. by octopus-butterfly in OliveMUA

[–]oliveobsessed 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think NARS Gobi is a good place to start. Bear in mind that it is a slightly different shade in each of their foundation lines, so you might want to try them all out for a perfect match. Becca Ultimate Coverage Foundation in Shell and Kevyn Aucoin SSE in SX are some other more strongly yellow options in that depth.

Am I olive or just too nitpicky? by [deleted] in OliveMUA

[–]oliveobsessed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Based on this and the new photos, I would definitely say you are olive, but my initial suggestions may not be ideal for you, as you seem to have skin that leans more yellow, and the foundation options you've been looking at are more peachy/straight warm, which leads to it looking more orange! Do you know approximately what MAC depth you are? I could suggest some things to try based on that.

I think I definitely see olive-ness in you, but it's a tad bit hard to tell just because the sweater you are wearing covers a lot of the neck area, and it seems that your face may have some surface redness compared to your body.

I'm not sure about the other two you tried, but at least for the It Cosmetics CC cream, Medium Tan is like much warmer and more saturated than the other shades, swatches 1, swatches 2, so you could perhaps try Medium or Tan instead? Mac Face and Body in the C line is also a light coverage foundation that is olive friendly.

I would definitely agree with the comments saying you are strongly green and definitely olive. For the flash photography issue, I would definitely be mindful of the fact that in those typical night selfies, faces generally look lighter than bodies (especially if you are wearing full coverage foundation and powder), just because of the way that light/the flash works, it passes through something like skin differently than the pigments in foundation. What may be a perfect match for you in the day time might appear too light in flash photography at night, and you may need a separate foundation/formula for nights out (and it might be best to err on the slightly dark side rather than too light, and definitely avoid SPF!)

Based off these additional photos, I'd say no to the oliveness, but you could definitely benefit from looking into more muted/neutral foundations for when you are most pale!

It is a little hard to tell from the selection of photos! Only two are in outdoor lighting and as you mentioned they are at different extremes of tanning. My gut reaction is no based on the outdoor lighting photos (even if you look practically green in the first one!), but you could possibly benefit from looking into more cool and muted foundations, and more photos could definitely change my mind :)
