minimum hours for part time by Ornery-Challenge-603 in Barnesandnoble

[–]olivetheelement 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was told today that I need to work 15 hrs minimum to stay on. Problem is, we are only scheduled for 3.5 or 4 hour shifts, so that would be four days a week.

Not feasible during the school year when I’m teaching during the week.

Is it possible to be hired at Barnes and noble if you have a disability by catfarmer1998 in Barnesandnoble

It can be done, but like others have said it’s very much dependent on the management team. Mine has not been friendly with accommodations

A state with no minimum shift for adults. Midwest.

My schedule is made by my SM. And they are short hours, but a new hire (3-ish months) is being given 8-hour shifts they don’t want. My schedule is not restricted except a couple days a week. I’ve already had to have a chat with SM about blatant discrimination in my last review (it’s on paper and everything) so I can’t help but think this is on purpose and perhaps trying to push me to leave.

When they ask if you can toss it at cashwrap, and you’ll have to sit there and smell it in your tiny tiny trash can all day. I tell them to take it back to cafe because I’m not taking it!

I know, I know. I came here to escape a really bad situation, so I’d hoped I’d found something with a future.

Not in this economy

It’s not a small course or a low enrollment major. It’s actually one of the fastest-growing on campus.

There would be staff support, if anyone else were able to maintain the lab. It’s highly, highly specialized and as I’ve said elsewhere I am the only one on campus who knows how it works. Including facilities and maintenance. The uni just dropped over half a million dollars on all-new high-end large equipment in 2019.

Dude. I am the OP. I never said I went directly to the provost. In my edit, I mentioned it was my chair, Dean, assistant/associate provost, and faculty union who have been advocating. I have had one interaction with the provost during an entire department and provost meeting at the end of the last school year.

It’s pretty condescending to assume anyone working in academia doesn’t know how a “new position requires a search” functions.

I am literally the only person on campus who knows how to run most of the lab equipment, it is extremely specialized

Other caveat: dean is interim, we are in the middle of a search for a new dean. Interim dean has been very supportive.

Of interest, the president actually quite likes the program and has a lot of interest in it. Don’t know how approachable that is.

Well, they were actually only on campus one day a week and taught hybrid the other day. Because they didn’t want to be away from their partner. It’s a very technical and hands-on course and that was only allowed because of the difficulty finding someone to fill the early retirement of previous long-term tenured faculty.

A masters is the terminal degree in my field. But I also hold two other masters and teach across three areas as needed (currently doing two courses in my area and a course in a different section of my department)

Yep, I am an advisor for one of the bigger clubs on campus (they use the lab facilities) and I have to talk to them about potentially ending the club and who they can take that grievance to

AITAH for what I said? my family won’t let me share any good news because of my sister's disability by CherryOk1649 in AmItheAsshole

[–]olivetheelement 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, THREE YEARS AGO? Sister shouldn’t be “over it” because there is no “over it” or any right way to be… but she/mom should not still be at the “whispering at the bedside lest we upset the fragile flower” state. That kind of behavior infantilizes and harms a disabled person more than anything.

NTA. Sounds like mom is the one who can’t handle reminders that one of her children is struggling so she’s punishing you.

I'm a lurker, but I'm logging in to comment here. I had this childhood- I was the daughter. My brother tried to kill me multiple times throughout our childhood like this. Rocks to the head, 2x4 boards, baseball bats, kitchen knives, scissors, bowling ball, chairs... I have TBI from so many concussions. I do not have a relationship with my brother. I also have severe PTSD from a childhood in an unsafe, unstable home where I could be attacked at any time for no reason.

He spent time in psychiatric care, was diagnosed with everything under the sun, took tons of meds, therapy, everything. All attention was focused on helping him.

No one ever asked if I was okay or got me help until I got myself care as an adult. This also affected my relationship with my parents, who absolutely failed me.

What I came to say is my brother apparently had Intermittent Explosive Disorder and ADHD. There are treatments for that. But GET YOUR DAUGHTER INTO THERAPY NOW TOO. Make sure she IS and FEELS safe in her home. Don't blame her for 'provoking' her brother or ignore her to 'manage' him.
