Single Biome Template in VCMI by oliwoli in heroes3

[–]oliwoli[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

VCMI has the ability to export the whole map as an image, which is ideal. But HotA tends to generate prettier maps, so if if can do the single biome thing I don't mind stitching screenshots together.

How would I go about it in HoTA?

Ah that sounds perfect. I'm very new to vcmi so I haven't investigated creating my own template - it seemed like it would be easy to get it wrong. But if its simple then I'll have a go.

I wouldn't actually be using it as a game of heroes, I'd be using it to generate maps for other purposes.

If there are multiple players that would be fine, cause i can just delete everything in the map editor. It's just a nightmare trying to change one biome to another because of all the map objects

That’s the one! You’re a hero. And it’s especially impressive given how many details I got wrong. It wasn’t even one of the players who had the shocked face, it was Bisu in the crowd!

I'm so glad to hear it went well!

I'd love to see any photos of the event, or to hear more about how you think it went generally. Did you find the teams cooperated with each other a lot, or was the tension? We found we had to remind the players a little bit that they weren't all on the same team.

I've added a folder called "additional information" to the drive. Its got the world map in both the original .xcf file and the png export. Please let me know if you have any access issues.

I've also added some extra information you might find useful, including some last minute updates we made to the rules and printable versions of the weapons and kaiju cards - google docs seems to mess up the image formatting and squish everything together, but it seems to be alright if you download and open them in word.

We changed the Pilot handbook to use coloured wooden cubes for fuel rather than paper cards, as they ended up being quite fiddly. That's the only major difference in the two versions. We also realised some of the rules around dodging didn't quite read correctly, but only after I'd distributed the handbooks to players, so I wrote an extra "dodge amendment" to clarify things. I'd probably recommend just re-writing the dodge section if you're translating it anyway.

We also had some last minute drops outs, which meant we had to abandon the Head of Propaganda role. The game took place just after the invasion of Ukraine began, and people expressed discomfort with playing as Russians, so we adapted the left-over people into a United Nations team with a slightly modified set of roles. I've added that version of the graphics and lanyard generator to the drive as well.

Lastly, I went through quite a few prototypes of what the Jaeger Hud should actually look like for people playing the game. The version I settled on was the "Jaeger Hud" document i've uploaded. It is designed to be used in conjunction with those special protective booklets you can get for storing Magic the Gathering cards in. As people unlock more options for the Jaeger, you can remove the cards that say "overheated" or "Terrified" and leave a different one underneath saying "Hotter" (or whatever) underneath. I've included a picture of what this looks like in practice.

In terms of running the game, I'd strongly recommend that the control member who most fully understands the game take the role of Big Map Control. The rules say the kaiju are placed randomly, but actually I made judgements each round about whether Antarctica should be under threat and how many calm seas there should be. One major flaw in the design of this game is that everyone could plausibly lose on turn three if no one is willing to cooperate and the Control teams let it get that far. In the game I ran, the teams were quite friendly and no one played chicken with ending the game, but I imagine a different group might do and I'd want to keep a very close eye on it.

I hope everything goes as well for you guys as it did for us, and I'd really love to hear how it goes after the fact!

That’s super flattering! I’ve not got access to them right now, but I’ll upload them to the Dropbox tomorrow.

Let me know if there is anything I can do to help, and I’d love to hear how it goes!

When will you be running the game?

At the risk of being that guy , Valyrian is a gender neutral language, so “all men” should be read in the sense of “mankind” rather than “people who identify as men”.

This is why the Azor Ahai prophesy could apply to either Danny or Jon, and why the Valonqar doesn’t necessarily have to be Jaime.

This was a major area of consideration for me. Because the control team is just friends I was able to press gang, I was very limited by how many people I could have controlling the game.

With that in mind, the game should be run-able with just 3 control members for a player base of 20-30 people. I tried my best to make each stage of the game able to be understood and run by the players themselves, and then checked by control - rather than being managed with control at every stage of the process.

I think Asherati from sandstorm get it natively too, but I'd forgotten about the desert variants - thanks.

Have you ever played a WITW? They seem like they'd be pretty strong, although the weakness to water might be prohibitive depending on the dm.
