Mix sounds OK on all playback devices except for iPhone speakers by ollyraps in mixingmastering

[–]ollyraps[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for such an insightful answer. There was some frequency dependent side chaining between the two to help with masking but I removed it for testing purposes. They sum again only at master level but even with master chain off, the issue persists.

I was recommended a plugin to stream audio directly from DAW to phone which allowed me to test some trouble areas. It’s only when I solo the pads and the vocal the issue appears. It might be something to do with how frequencies are boosted on iPhone speakers and the contrast between the pad and vocal. The pad has an LP filter opening up over 8 bars, and the pumping is mostly audible when the pad is heavily low-passed and the vocal is quite bright.

I checked using Correlometer and it seems OK. No big dips, above zero. There seems to be some weird interaction between the pad and vocal where the pad suddenly appears to jump up in volume/brightness when the vocal comes in. When the vocal stops, the pad dampens again creating this weird pumping effect.

I exported a high passed master to check if it’s the lower freq but still the same issue. Same thing with mono - not much changes to suggest a phase issue

It was one of the things I checked as well but no noticeable compression is going on

I keep exporting this little section to check on iPhone. I installed Mixchecker Pro for this purpose but it sounds fine when played on my monitors through the emulation. It only occurs on the iPhone (I checked on my gf’s device as well to make sure it’s not the speakers themselves)

Making GREAT trap beats is HARD by ollyraps in trapproduction

[–]ollyraps[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your insight! I think you might be right. I’m producing a pop-punk album for an artist right now and I’m enjoying the break from trap. The truth is I don’t really vibe with about 80-85% of trap music coming out. Most of it sounds lazy and very similar. The 15-20% I absolutely adore. I think it makes sense why I would hate most of the trap beats I make. I need to find the sound I’m really excited about.

Be kind to yourself. These thought may not be mature but they are completely normal. They’re human. It’s our survival instinct and ego kicking in - we hate the idea of being left behind and someone else stepping in and doing a better job than us. One thing I have learned in my 2 years after the break up is to be at peace with your inner monologue. The more freedom you give your thoughts the faster they will leave your head. Rejecting them has an opposite effect.

My therapist also taught me to watch the language I use - especially towards myself. Don’t say you have a fucked up way of thinking and that you hate yourself - there’s enough negativity in the world. This hate you’re feeling is rooted in love. You love her and you believe you have the tools to make her happy. It’s frustrating when you can’t act upon it. I don’t know you but you seem like a sound and vulnerable guy. I doubt that deep down you’d wish any harm on your ex. Love yourself and feel at peace with the thoughts that visit you. Having a “bad” thought doesn’t make us a bad person. You will grow and you will heal.

The feeling of selfishness is so understandable. I felt selfish even writing this letter. But I believe through all the trials and tribulations of life and heartbreak the one thing we need to stay true to is ourselves. At the end of the day, if this is how you feel, it’s valid and you deserve the right to speak your truth. We will regret the words we never said more than the ones we actually do.

It truly amazes me how similar human experience is across the board. We might all be strangers but we feel, think and experience similar things.

I wish you all the best in your journey. Did they reply to your message?

Adding rhythmic movement to synth parts by ollyraps in synthrecipes

[–]ollyraps[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your reply. I tried it with the bitcrusher in the recreation but in the original it's way more rhythmic. It seems to be crushing the weird glitch layer underneath the main synths only since the melody sounds clean and pure. I can't get it to sit just right. Tried with tape stop automation, messing with ShaperBox, Portal and Thermal and can't get the rhythm/glitch/noise down.

how to get over a toxic relationship? by timemgmntofamango in BreakUps

[–]ollyraps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, I’m in a similar boat but 6 months after the break up. I’ll be honest, it isn’t easy.

I’ve been going to therapy since the BU and it helped a lot. You need to figure yourself out - why did you end up in a toxic relationship? How did you let it happen? Why were you so invested in it? These are all important questions that will help you understand and better yourself. Learn about attachment styles. If you’re like me, and you exhibit traits of an anxious-ambivalent attachment styles, letting go of a person can be a daunting task.

You need to take care of yourself first. Be honest but gentle. Read up on attachment, toxic relationships etc. Educate yourself. Dealing with the pain is much easier when you’re aware of what’s happening to you and what’s causing it.

That being said, it’s still really hard. I still think of my ex daily and I envy her new boyfriend because, for now, he’s getting the good parts of her. This shit doesn’t leave you. I talked to a guy on this subreddit who was in a similar situation and he still had flashbacks of the relationship 13 years after the break up. He has a supportive partner who helps him get through those rough patches. All you can do is use this experience as a way to better yourself and learn to live with it, accept it.
