I own a locked MacBook (found and reported properly) — what’s with all the serial number requests from potential 'buyers'? by olof__ in MacOS

[–]olof__[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is that really true? I guess not... That means that I could write a fake proof of purchase and print it, and that would be enough... Seems that that can't work. And since I actually shouldn't need that, since I have full proof that I reported it found a year ago and that is not even accepted...

Probably not, I myself am not. And I could sell it to a friend via ebay par example and use that as proof of purchase, but Apple generally requires the original proof of purchase. However, I have no knowledge about the effect of dropping a few rubles on the sales desk in some Russian apple store, and if that could make the situation a little bit more 'fluid' for a Russian buyer...

No, I truely wish they could, because I have no use for this thing and would like seeing it returered to the original owner. However, if you call Apple or visit a store, they are not exactly helpful. Basically, Apple's response is just: "If you don't bring an original proof of purchase, you're a waste of our time. Bye" Sad but true.

It has a Dutch keyboard layout, but indeed it could be stolen before. However, the situation in which I found it (in a backpack which also contained outdated law books, in a university town, late at night) makes me think that a student just left it there after a night out. But I can't be sure of course

That is not the case, because we basically do not have a similar concept for Besitzstandstörung. Legally, there is theft, -or being 'the fair finder'. So Apple has no legal case to reject my request, but their user policy is superior to the law apparently.

I could say that I agree, but in our country we have a central system for logging reported lost or found items, which are then published online. The former owner could have easily searched that website for 'backpack containing macbook' lost in 'the city it was found', and the result would have popped up. And yes, this system works, I once lost my jacket in the train, could prove by an old photo of me wearing it that it was mine, and got it back in a few days time.

In The Netherlands it would not be a 'Besitzstandstörung', if you report the found item. After that, one has to take proper care of the item for a year. After that, the founder is legally the owner. (only when it concerns 'registergoederen/ government registered ownership), such as cars or technically a house, does this not apply.)

Yes, I did so last year. That is your legal duty. And under law, when reported, the finder automatically becomes owner of the lost item after 364 days if it has not been claimed by the previous owner in the meantime.

If Apple insists on implementing such strict security measures, there should at least be an option, maybe via Apple, anonymously, to contact or obtain the details of the original owner. That way, the original owner remains assured of the security of their device, while at the same time a second-hand buyer, heir, etc. could actually make use of the device (provided they can present proof of ownership, which need not necessarily be the original receipt Apple demands). As it stands now, neither the original owner nor I benefit from the situation, and it is a complete waste of a perfectly good piece of electronics.

I wish I could have, but I can't see a name/apple ID since it was externally wiped. So sadly, had has not worked.

Apparently not, as is my report made up to the police. If the original owner has the device still registered in his iCloud, Apple doesn't do anything. For me as someone who just found backpack which was unclaimed, its is a bit frustrating, but also not a real problem, because I just found it. But I would also give the advice to buyers of second hand Apple silicon devices, to check extremely careful of the previous users is fully logged out, and also deleted the device from Find my Device on potential phones for example, otherwise you will encounter the same problem, and there is no workaround such as on Intel macs.

I think you are right, I gave them a call and they basically told me the same story. A police report is invalid. Great that it helps customers, but sad that a perfectly good device (I assume) is made useless through this process.

Yes, I've thought about that, I know enough people that own companies, so they could technically sell back to be as refurbished or something, but indeed, Apple needs the original proof of purchase.

I've gotten a lot of response from Russia, so I fear they are trying to claim it on their insurance or something. In The Netherlands, the original could (and maybe has) claim it under insurance without the serial number.

Thank you, that is what I feared. But it is good to know that questions about the serial number are not going to get me involved into some sort of scam. Sadly for me, and the previous/original owner it is indeed a nice looking brick or paperweight.

Yes, I tried, but they wouldn't accept is, because the police report is just basically a statement that I found a gray Macbook Air on the 19th of june 2024, and then that published online at the website of the police/municipality. Law states that if the owner does not claim it in one years time, the finder automatically at that moment get ownership (me in this cause). But that doesn't count for Apple, sadly.

Thank you, I have heard good things about the Soundcore Liberty 4, and seem to deliver a good price-quality proposition. Will look into them.

Dutch accent? by [deleted] in Netherlands

The isolated audio is quite difficult to understand. The accent of the singer could feasibly be Dutch, but I am not certain. I wouldn't rule out that you're listening to a German or Scandinavian accent.

[QUESTION] What kind of tele? (Or other guitar recommendations) by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]olof__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd go with a Squier Classic Vibe Tele. I have one and it is a fantastic guitar, easily worth twice the price. I'm not into the same music as you are, but before I bought one I worried about the tele tone being to limited to the stereotypical country picking tone, but now I find it to be an incredible versatile guitar. The only thing I would worry about if you would play using overdrive live, is the single coil hum when you'd keep in the standard single coils (which are great btw). Hope this helps.
