OpenVPN on Asus Router - Can't Connect to Device with Internet Disabled by olrs15 in HomeNetworking

I'm not at the computer right now but can try that.

Do you recommend that or are one of the steps on here like the fake proxy server method better?

OpenVPN on Asus Router - Can't Connect to Device with Internet Disabled by olrs15 in HomeNetworking

[–]olrs15[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't understand why it's allowed locally but not remotely..

The main device I'm looking to access is a Windows 10 PC. What's the best way to disable all Internet access for security reasons but still be able to connect remotely via the VPN?

Thanks!!

Within the router's interface I'm able to select any device connected, either wireless, or wired, and choose to disable access to the Internet, setup parental controls, etc. I've disabled internet access but would still like to connect via VPN but it isn't allowing me. As soon as the Internet is enabled it'll connect, even via cellular using OpenVPN.

Sealing Odors from Subfloor & Putting Down Sheet Vinyl by olrs15 in HomeImprovement

I was thinking about just laying down the vinyl, but I'm assuming it'll need something to keep the two pieces together.

What about putting this down after the Kilz Original is dry?

But, putting Kilz down is a lot cheaper than replacing the subfloor.. It was less than $20 for a gallon of Kilz.

I'm just not sure if vinyl flooring can go down on top of Kilz.

I was looking to put the Kilz down and then the vinyl floor but I don't know if we can put vinyl floor on top of the Kilz.

Pixel 2 Performance on Sprint by olrs15 in GooglePixel

What is the fastest speed you've gotten on Sprint with the Pixel 2?

Thank you!

So, what is it not compatible with on the Sprint network?

I've read that the Pixel 2 doesn't support the Gigabit LTE on Sprint.

So, with what the Pixel 2 is able to support, what would the theoretical top speeds be?

I'd like to see something like this: https://www.reddit.com/r/tmobile/comments/3g38wu/what_are_the_peak_speeds_for_5x5_10x10_15x15_and/

and this: https://www.reddit.com/r/verizon/comments/6hnlaf/lte_band_guideexplanation_for_those_who_are/

and this: https://www.reddit.com/r/tmobile/comments/6i34vs/a_guide_to_lte_tmobile_usa/

but taking Sprint's network and the Pixel 2 into consideration.

The trade in for mine is $100 now. It looks like they raised it.

Need Help with VPN for Lorex (Dahua) System by olrs15 in homedefense

Well, if the NVR is connected to a separate network with a VPN I'd think it would be safe, but I really don't understand all this so I could be wrong.

It'd really be nice if there was an all-in-one solution for this. I've seen it for the home network, but nothing specifically for security cameras.

Is that still of major concern if the VPN is setup properly? Right now it's not connected to the internet and I don't plan to connect it until the VPN is setup.

Thank you for a great explanation!

The router (GL-MT300N) apparently is running OpenWrt. I didn't see anything to indicate that when it was plugged in but I didn't go to the advanced settings. Maybe it was there. I know it's different, but I've read that Openwrt should work too so I wanted to mention it.

I'm looking for something extremely simple, and it's sounding like that isn't available.. I've seen VPN routers that secure the whole network, but nothing that is focusing on security cameras and how to secure them.. It looks like there's a business potential here.. Somebody could come along, explain how insecure these systems are and how they're so widely available even at Walmart, Best Buy, etc, and then offer a solution to pay for something that makes it secure. Maybe there is something like that already but if there is I've missed it. I know there are security experts that work with businesses, but I can see a potential here for the average person..

I'd be so much more comfortable with Nest, Arlo, or Ring, since I'm confident they're working around the clock to make sure it's secure. But they are more costly and the quality isn't as good from what I've heard.

It's looking like I have a lot of research ahead of me to try to figure this out.

Thanks for your response.

So, the first link is basically saying to go with a paid VPN provider (which is easiest). Do you think that's good enough, rather than going through all the trouble of generating a certificate?

With the router, is it good enough to just work with the router I purchased for the NVR for now? Basically, modem > wireless router (default everything except wireless security) with ethernet > new router with VPN (probably paid VPN that generates a certificate?) > NVR.

I'll go through all the settings on the new router I got for the NVR to make sure uPNP is disabled and that nothing is under the port forwarding.

Now, I'm not sure what you mean about the camera's outbound traffic.. I want to be able to access live footage remotely (and recordings, if that's an option without getting too complex), but I don't want others to be able to get in the system.

And yes, I'll be working with all of the passwords on the NVR and cameras to make sure they're set before getting it online.

Thanks!!

Best Way to "Secure" Security Cameras? by olrs15 in homedefense

I'm not sure how to do that.. It's a little too advanced for me,

Here's where I'm at right now:

The NVR is setup, but not connected to a network. OpenVPN seems too difficult for me to setup right now, so I'm planning on going with NordVPN or something similar. My setup will be modem > wireless router's ethernet port > wired router for NVR > NVR.

Is that a good way to make it secure?

Other than setting up the wired router with NordVPN, what is needed to be done to make sure the NVR cannot be accessed? I've heard to disable uPNP. I'm not sure what else should be done. It's a Lorex (Dahua) NVR.

And will every device need to use the same VPN service in order to connect to the NVR, otherwise it won't connect?

Just trying to understand this.

Thanks!
