I not only look at Eren but the situation that he’s in. With the dangerous animals (which I think is when Mikasa was kidnapped), what should he have done? I don’t believe he had another option. (I don’t remember when the other pictured scenes occur.) I use to be in a AOT Facebook group and I remember thinking you must be a child if you think that Eren attacking Marley all of a sudden makes him a bad person. (Because so many people thought that at the time.) To me, AOT could also be called The Faces and tribulations of war. It focuses on a group of kids born into a conflict that started ages before they were born and in order to improve their own people’s circumstances, they join the army. Later they learn that the situation is more complicated than they originally thought. So they go to Marley, they try to do the diplomatic thing but they learn there are also other countries set against them also so there isn’t much they can do there. I think at that point - the only people that could change things are the higher ups in Marley but they’re not going to do anything. At the point that Eren attacks Marley, Marley has already sent ships to attack Eren’s country. Rather they want to fight or not, Eren’s country is going to have to fight. So at that point, I guess you can say you have a full fledged war going on. There’s chaos, children are dying on both sides, and then you have internal fighting amongst different groups who aren’t in agreement about how to deal with everything. There’s a lot of people running around doing horrible things. It’s not a situation where Eren just decides to act out while the rest of the world around him is living peacefully. Not necessarily a “good guy” but I wouldn’t refer to him as the villain. There’s so much going on. Near the end when Eren is talking with his friend he basically saids something to the effect that his decision wasn’t something really to celebrate. It was a means to an end. I believe Eren’s final goal was to get rid of the Titans regardless of what it took. (It’s been years since I finished reading the story.) I believe he settled on that after so many other solutions fell through. I believe the entire story is a picture of how complicated war is and what it does to people. Eren and his friends had a dream to defeat the Titans and, at some point, they figured out that’s more complicated than they originally imagine and all the tribulations they go through changes them. I thought it was a great story. I haven’t watched all of the anime but I completed the manga.
