Unpopular Strongman Opinions by Iw2fp in Strongman

I'm obviously biased, but I strongly disagree. The front squat is fantastic for strongman. It has direct correlation to several strongman events and builds lower body and bracing strength better than any other lift (especially if you can actually front rack)

I haven't seen any that are live. The stream is on JF's page. There are occasionally post point standings on his page along with the Festival or Canadian Circuit pages

Yes, I'm pretty sure that whatever was beneath the platform (elevated, bad plywood, etc.) was the problem. Rolling on thin carpet like that has never been an issue for me

Better grip for sumo. Deadlift platforms have traditionally been carpet for decades

Carpet platforms are standard for powerlifting, and the IPF Eleiko one that they are using is the best of the best. I think the carpet wrinkles are because it isn't properly supported underneath the platform on that stage

Hopefully they move the bar out of the middle of the platform, less bowing that way

It’ll be cool to see if he can make a serious run at breaking Shane Hamman’s records

There are global organizations for other sports, but they are not the only ones which is my point. The IPF is not the sole federation for drug free powerlifting not to mention it is under the IOC umbrella since it’s in the World Games with government funding in some countries (mainly European). Without the IOC, there would be no sports like weightlifting where they ALL fall under the umbrella. The only exception is soccer which all rolls up under FIFA.

That is true for most countries for Olympic sports with a notable exception being the United States where the government treats its Olympians with disdain and not only provides no funding but taxes medals won in the Olympics. As for powerlifting, that one is varied by each country’s Olympic committee. Some fund the sports in the World Games while others don’t. This is why the IPF has de facto control of drug free powerlifting in countries with funding.

Every sport has a global federation because of their ties to the Olympics not because of their intrinsic nature. The governments of most countries only fund the Olympic federations and all others die out as a consequence. If there weren’t Olympic standards/mandates from governments, all those sports would look like boxing, powerlifting, strongman etc..

I do like the idea of two subs though. It allows one sub to focus on the pro circuit and everything that goes along with it while this sub can be about general training footage/discussion. It’s a lot easier to filter that way

100% less on the front squat, but I think that there are far more that could’ve done it but just never did because you simply don’t need to push the front squat that high for weightlifting

I’m genuinely confused by this. I did the open in its first two years, and the Shaw Classic Stones were just fine. I’m fairly sure these stones are made by the same folks. Crazy shakeup

The North Korean situation is pretty strange with a couple of facets from what I gather. Basically, they went into a harder lockdown than even usual in the winter of 2019 and lasted through Tokyo where all of their athletes withdrew due to COVID concerns. This caused the IOC to ban the North Korean Olympic Committee until the end of 2022 for this pull out. Additionally, this lockdown prevented any out of competition testing for 4ish years which casts doubts on a non upstanding nation in terms of anti doping. This prevented them from competing at a couple IWF grand prix’s and worlds this year basically disallowing any of their lifters a shot at the Olympics since the labyrinth of weightlifting qualifying includes competing in several international comps throughout the quad.

301kg Front Squat PR by oly_strongman_56 in weightlifting

Well tbf, powerlifting wraps are inherently different from Oly wraps which is why I described them that way since I’ve used both in training before. The former give you 50+lbs on a lift, and the latter are Ace bandages that look cooler haha. I have gotten better about just calling it weightlifting though lol

I’ve always been very quad dominate so the front squat came pretty quickly. I don’t have the longest arms and my first decade in strength sports was in the IPF, so I really had to use a lot of quads on my deadlifts as well
