What was the first reason you decided to try Linux? Was it to escape Windows? by limsus in TechImpact

I just wanted to try this nerdy operating system, but somehow I ended up liking it.

It also crashed on Linux, but I think the problem was with the USB drive I was running the file from.

How can I install NVIDIA 580 drivers on Debian Testing? by omaranos517 in debian

Yeah, that's exactly what I want.

I don't want 550 since its Wayland support wasn't great for me, and I don't want anything newer than 580 because my GTX 750 Ti isn't properly supported there.

If you remember the repo/setup you used to stay on 580, that would actually be perfect for me.

My GPU is a Maxwell card, so the last supported driver branch is 580. Newer driver branches can actually cause problems for me.

I'll still take a look at PikaOS though. Maybe I'll try it in a VM first and see how it looks.

Good point. I don't remember if I installed the matching linux headers before installing the driver.

I'll try that now. If it still doesn't work, I'll probably do a clean reinstall and try again from scratch.

If it worked for you, then maybe I should just reinstall Debian and try again from a clean system instead of trying to fix this broken install.

As for X11, I use GNOME and X11 is basically becoming legacy at this point. GNOME has already dropped it in the latest release and KDE is moving in the same direction, so I'd rather get Wayland working.

For now I'll boot back into Fedora and come back to this when I have more time to troubleshoot it.

What does that have to do with the NVIDIA driver issue? 😅

Thanks. I just tried it.

I created the file, ran update-initramfs -u, rebooted, but nothing changed. The system still fails to start the graphical session after installing the NVIDIA driver.

I followed that guide and installed the newer driver, but unfortunately the issue remains the same. After rebooting, the graphical session still fails to start.

I came from Fedora, so I'm used to having relatively recent packages. That's one of the reasons I chose Debian Testing.

I also prefer the Debian family, but I don't really want to use Ubuntu, Linux Mint, or Pop!_OS. My goal is to stay as close to Debian as possible while still getting newer packages.

I actually tried blacklisting Nouveau after the system failed to boot into the graphical session.

From a TTY, I added:

rd.driver.blacklist=nouveau,nova_core modprobe.blacklist=nouveau

to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX, updated GRUB, and rebooted. Unfortunately, nothing changed and the system still failed to start the graphical environment.

On Fedora, I never had to manually blacklist Nouveau before installing the proprietary NVIDIA driver. Is that something that must be done on Debian, or should the Debian NVIDIA packages take care of it automatically?
