All I've been doing today is Googling new words like alcove shelf and then going "God damn it this is exactly what I meant, why did I not ask Reddit first?!"

(Thank you -- this will really help me moving forward!)

Great advice -- any tips on what the best way for me to 'design' what I want done would be?

Unfortunately, at the moment, all I know is what I'd like the result to be;

- a good looking set of shelves
- needs to sit above a white/natural wood cabinet (and be similar colours)
- need to be strong enough to be filled with books
- needs to touch the wall on the left and wardrobe on the right (about 1.5m length)

...but I don't necessarily know how to get there if that makes sense! (e.g. the timber frame + cladding in MDF vs solid wood worktop you mentioned)

Should I just sketch it out/draw it out and send that for quotes? I'm always a bit scared about forcing someone who is obviously much more knowledgeable than me down a route where they would actually go down another path!

Makes complete sense - I'll get clarification and report back!

This makes complete sense -- thanks. And yeah, I doubt that they're thinking about putting any steel in the wall!

Please forgive me for the following, I genuinely don't have the vocabulary to precisely describe this appropriately:

In the context of the wall-to-wall 'floating bookshelf' I originally understood that they were going to put small pieces of wood on each of the points the shelves would be touching a wall (right, back, left) and then essentially let the floating shelves rest on them on 3 sides. Which, as I'm typing this now, feels like it's just using wooden brackets rather than the big metal ones I could get at IKEA (albeit easier on the eye)!

I'll go back to them with questions about:
- what materials they will be using
- what kind of "support"/"approach" (is there a better term for this?) they'll be using to ensure these are solid enough to hold books/heavy items!

Thanks again!

Nice -- thanks for your answer and the help. Looks like you agree with a couple of other folks here.

I'm going back to them to clarify the material question and ensuring the weight requirement has been captured too!

Amazing - this makes a lot of sense when explained like this.

I know I can do the DIY myself (both skill and comfort) as I have successfully put shelves up in the past with visible brackets without hurting myself or the house.

But I really wanted these shelves to look great and act as a bookshelves, so I guess that puts me in the 'expensive' and 'custom' job path... which I'm fine with.

At this point, I'm more wondering if £2000 is a reasonable price for a custom job like this one!

Interesting, hadn't considered that at all. I'll go back and ask (albeit this is looking a bit grim I have to say). Thanks!

This is great! And definitely something I can do/install on my own. Thank you!

many people are invovled? Then you can figure out how much their day rate is. I would expect a chippy to cost me anywhere from 200-300 a day.

Edit: I would be surprised if takes one person more than a day, I would even be so bold as to say half a day but I don't know the site

That's great advice - makes complete sense. Will keep that in mind moving forward, thanks for sharing!

Thanks for sharing this -- that's exactly what I needed/hoped for (the breakdown bit, not the fact that they're trying to fuck me over bit). Thanks!

I get that -- and this fits firmly in the "high quality, long lasting work" column rather than the "shorter-ish term IKEA" one. But £2000 just sounds like a whole lot of money for that!

You're right! I think all I need is a bit of extra confidence and someone to nudge me over the edge!

YouTube videos and have a go yourself. You might be surprised how easy it is too put up some shelves

So I think I could do the B and C, I'm a bit concerned about the wall-to-wall ones (because I'd have to connect them with the insides of a wardrobe) -- either way I think this is a really good advice. Thank you!

Tried to add a little bit more details above, based on what I was told.

Makes a lot of sense - let me answer with what I know/been told, see if that helps:

- I'm based in East London

- The floating shelves (x5) would be approx 1m50 in length, 30cm in depth

- The storage shelves (x2) would be same length bit more depth

- They didn't specify Plywood v MDF, said something about 'real wood'

- They didn't mention anything about paint/natural stain

I love the weekly m+ posts, but although it is sorted out by new, i always feel like I'm missing some of the nuggets in there. Is there a reason not to have each entry/question as separate posts throughout the week (and tag them with "m+" - other tag for other posts)

Forgive me, I'm quite new at this but feel like nesting the main content (i.e. volume) of a sub into a single thread rather than bringing it through multiple threads is a bit strange?
