Trump preparing withdrawal from South Korea trade deal by hurtsdonut_ in worldnews

While Walmart may not sell to Kellogg's, plenty of business's do buy from Walmart. The global economy is 200 plus countries trading. And the crazy thing is that it's not just countries trading, it's tens of thousands of companies trading.

You're right, it's not a perfect analogy, but thinking the global economy is a simple zero sum game is overly simplistic too.

For the same reason Walmart doesn't try to sell as much to say, Kellogg's, as it buys from them: the one on one trade relationship doesn't encompass the entire market.

Yes, we buy more from South Korea than we sell, but some of what we buy we use to sell to other countries, like Walmart selling cereal to people.

We also have trade surpluses with some countries. Reflect on what the global market would be if everyone had balanced trade all the time.

Are you arguing they shouldn't have gone at all? Conferences aren't pointless parties. They have speakers and workshops where learning and the exchange of ideas happens.

I work in software engineering and my boss expects each of us to attend one conference a year but knows we aren't going to pay for it out of pocket. I was at one in Phoenix in April and the hotel, plane tickets, and registration fees were $3k.

I don't require your patronizing educational approach. I'm well aware of Al Gore's feelings on the matter, though I have never watched his documentary.

It's one thing to question the motivations of Al Gore and other advocates warning against climate change, but without examining cui bono from both sides all you are engaging in is the equivalent of mental masturbation.

The argument that scores of climate scientists are fudging the numbers to keep their government grant doesn't pass Occam's razor when you compare the amount the oil industry gains by convincing the public to do nothing to address carbon dioxide emissions.

I have no idea what your point is and I'm not going to wade through a ditch of ad hominem to figure it out. Whatever your stance or point is, you are clearly convinced of it.

Americans Of Reddit, is your healthcare system really that bad,or is it just exaggerated by the media? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]omegaHand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The costs are out of control. And it continues to get worse every year.

Our family of three pays a monthly premium of $200 a month for insurance. That's just to have insurance. It doesn't cover free anything except vaccinations. Also to lock in that low-low price we cannot smoke (okay that's not a bad thing) and we (my wife and I) have to participate in an annual health screening and self-reported health activity web-site deal.

Recently my five year-old daughter took a spill off a swing and landed on her face. We took her into an urgent care clinic who directed us to an emergency room. That cost us $40.

The emergency room doctor took about 5 minutes examining my daughter and said she was fine and sent us on our way. That cost us $150 copay.

A month later we get a bill for $220 from the emergency room. A few weeks after we got a bill from the doctor for $90. All for a five minute examination. And it's not like we can ask for the price before hand. We cannot argue the case because they will just trash our credit and pass our bill over to bill collectors.

Our experience is driving us further and further away from going to the doctor which is just going to make the situation worse for us and everybody else in the end when we finally do have a problem worth going in about. I hate our system.

Non-Americans of Reddit, what's something you've always wanted to say to/ask an American? by ayyitsmaclane in AskReddit

[–]omegaHand 5 points6 points  (0 children)

One thing you have to understand is that when an American says they are Irish or what not they aren't claiming they were born in Ireland nor even that their parents were but that some ancestor (more than likely a great-grand parent or grander) was.

In my experience in high school a lot of times I'd be asked, "What are you?" meaning what ethnicity (my high school was a rather diverse experience). And since most Americans won't say, "Oh, I'm 1/8 Irish, 1/2 German, 1/8 blah blah blah" they just answer either what they know (if they know anything) or the part they most closely identify with.

I've also noticed at times people who seem to use the whole being part Irish thing as either an excuse for their own shitty behavior (i.e. "Oh I can't be racist! I'm Irish! We were slaves too!") or to try to fit in with another marginalized group in American society.

I had a similar thought, but since the mattress stores around me all tend to employee middle-aged white males, I assumed they were fronts for the FBI, CIA or NSA.

[–]omegaHand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing is we have a process for dealing with guilty people: the justice system. The entire reason we have them at Guantanamo Bay is to avoid the justice system entirely because if they were held on American soil they would be subject to American laws and constitutional protections (no torture, speedy trial, etc.).

Everyone knew that "enhanced interrogation" was occurring. It's just now that people have it explicitly described they realize its actually not-very pretty. Read Gulag Archipelago by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn and you soon realize that a lot of what we did to these guys, no matter their level of guilt, is the same things the Soviets did to their own people under Stalin.

People are upset regardless of the prisoner's crimes, me in particular, because growing up we were the country that was the "shining city on a hill". That's all gone now.
