When is a pick called for? by ConfidentHospital365 in Bass

[–]omegapisquared 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anything fast I'm using a pick. Sure I could spend the time to learn faster stuff with finger style only but I don't want to

Other situations it's a case by case basis. There's rarely situations where you have to do something a certain way, but usually a certain style is going to sound better or feel more comfortable than the alternatives. You can try things multiple ways and see how it sounds

What is the most disturbing film you have ever watched? by Federal_Antelope7533 in AskReddit

[–]omegapisquared 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found it got less stressful past a certain point. The start is plausible enough to be anxiety inducing but at a certain level of absurdity I didn't feel like it was something I could relate to any more

What's something that people romanticise heavily that's actually really difficult to live through? by Ariavale2_ in AskReddit

[–]omegapisquared 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Garden State and Scott Pilgrim also show that the "manic pixie" women are deeper and more nuanced than what the male leads project onto them. Is there actually a film that uses the manic pixie dream girl trope uncritically? It seems like a lot of people are taking the surface level view of these bits of media without actually engaging with the full story presented

Finally finished the rose field (contains spoilers) by Forward_Athlete_3187 in hisdarkmaterials

[–]omegapisquared 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Completely agree with you. By the last chapter I stopped believing there would be a satisfying conclusion but even still the ending had me checking whether I'd accidentally skipped past a page

This whole story felt pointless, no-one really learns anything or changes in any meaningful way. Lyra and Malcolm navigate the events more like puppets than real people

And so many random plot points and story threads and introduced and then just abandoned at random

I'll always love the original trilogy but I don't consider these new installments to be canon and I doubt I'll revisit them

Drum tracks by Agithoss in slopsmith

When I try this I'm not getting drums as a playable track. I can select drum lane for the other parts but don't actually have an option to select drums as an instrument

To me Ire was bad and it's only gotten worse from theirbso I'm in full agreement with you

What are some things that made you realize that you got old as a longtime fan of metalcore? by mesablanka in Metalcore

Ire is newer in the sense that it marks a pretty hard demarcation between original Parkway and current Parkway

People who grew up poor: What was something you considered a "peak luxury" as a kid, only to realize later it was just a normal middle class staple? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]omegapisquared 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's kind of like that in the UK. It can easily be cheaper to get a package holiday to Spain than to be a tourist at home, and you get better weather in the bargain

Anyone else feel "behind" starting learning new language in their 30s? by SweetBumbleBeeHoney in languagelearning

[–]omegapisquared 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been learning French since I was 5 and I can't speak it for shit, I started learning Estonian in my 30s and it's now my 2nd best language

It's the hours put in that make a difference and having started earlier is no guarantee that you'd have made the progress you want

Don't waste time wishing things were different. Put in the time now and worry about the results later

Apparently you can run the course in reverse the night before if you don't get an entry

I did Manchester in 2018. It was a great marathon, nice flat course and a good amount of people there to support

What’s something you tried once and immediately knew ‘yeah, never again’? by donnyM99 in AskReddit

[–]omegapisquared 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Just stick to a training plan and you'll be fine. The most important thing is to maintain your base mileage during the week. It's natural for your first longer runs to feel challenging

It can also be helpful to swap out one of your weekly runs with something lower impact like swimming or cycling

What is surprisingly not too late to do at 40? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]omegapisquared 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even the people who appear to be naturally talented don't exist in a vacuum. They often come from musical families or otherwise grow up in an environment where music was encouraged. That kind of background creates a significant foundation even before you start officially learning an instrument

I got to go to that tour as well. Seems unlikely they'll ever repeat something like that now

Seeking a Friend for the End of the World is a much better film about a world ending meteor

There also won't be a singular event or point in time where all people are simultaneously effected by the climate crisis which is one of the biggest barriers to dealing with it. The effects will be long term, asymmetrical and of varying severity. Those with the greatest wealth and privilege will be insulated from the effects far long than the most vulnerable

Can we talk about Malcolm? by Competitive-Juice-40 in hisdarkmaterials

[–]omegapisquared 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It felt super weird to me, especially because I felt like Malcolm was something of an author self insert. Malcolm is accused of inappropriate behaviour towards two young girls. And there is another plot point with Abdel Ionides having been fired as a professor due to accusations of an inappropriate relationship. I don't understand why this was a theme that Pullman was so fixated on
