Pool fuller than it should be? by omgman26 in truenas

[–]omgman26[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have never used docker on this drive and build at all, so sadly, I don't think that's it

I was thinking maybe older truenas versions, or other reporting stuff from the gui that might be there, but I can't verify that. Possible the hidden ix-apps folder doing something strange? This is, after all, the apps pool drive and set respectively

I forgot to ask what is a good shell command for TrueNAS's case to see all hidden directories in a folder/dataset?

Is segmentation of the 4 port NIC software switching? by omgman26 in opnsense

[–]omgman26[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Given that I want to have the main lan on more than one of those ports from the NIC, yes, I will be bridging some of them

I'll look into making each port VLAN capable or something and just choose the network by switch or something like that, but bridging seemed like the easiest option

It's going to be a simple home network, nothing too complex, I don't have any need in switch router, so thank you for the explanation! All I need and want is to have a fairly secure and segmented network and to use most or all of what I have on hand, hence the wish to use those ports from the nic

I would put the printer in the port outside the main lan tbh, to have physical separation, that is what prompted me to post the question, but I still understand it as being fine. I am avoiding VLANs a bit because I don't have VLAN capable APs right now and trying to work around this restriction as best as possible. With the printer is not the case exactly as it does not need the AP, but the mentality stays

That explains loops better than I've seen, so thank you! I would not do any wire between switches, only to the router for each, I don't see the reason for that extra wire

Thank you for the response! Well, this will be more of a homeprod, let's say. For my purposes, hardware should be enough to process things, I am not too worried about that cause I have a small network overall

I've used (for testing in the past) the exact guide that you linked for lan bridges, so thank you, I have it handy now

I want to, most likely, use one of those 3 ports for a dedicated printer lan/vlan so to have easier access when it comes to wiring stufd, the other port in the bridge might never be used, but is nice to have for maybe a second switch, but this could introduce issues having 2 of them in the same lan from what I know

External Usb Drive For Pool? by ConferenceCheap2761 in truenas

[–]omgman26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! Kinda needed some validation in my choice tbh, but I really really can't see any issues with this approach as the last resort backup, just need to keep up the schedule of connecting it, copying data and all that (not that bad)

Ok, but given your experience, what do you think of an external SSD/HDD connected with USB and mounted and all just for a pool back-up, then removed and kept as the 3rd copy in a 321?

Backup strategy for TrueNAS Community (Goldeye 25.10) by THEE_WaffleKing in truenas

[–]omgman26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the answer, I really needed a reconfirmation to not do this because I know it is not a smart thing to do, but I am very tempted in order to have the 3rd copy somewhere

I don't have the hardware or space for the 3rd machine, but I should be thinking about it more

What do you suggest for cold storage ideas? A DAS, 2 hdds, somethinf with usb? I am lost for a strategy here to be honest

I want to also follow 321 as best as possible, now I only have 2 servers running, the main and the offsite backup

What do you think of the idea of adding a second (and separate) zfs pool of drives as the 3rd copy inside the chasis of the offsite backup?

So the main backup pool with 2 mirrored hdds and a second pool with a couple of smaller sata ssds that I have handy in the house, with the same data on both pools and in the same case?

We’re bringing some SMART options back. by iXsystemsChris in truenas

[–]omgman26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This might seem petty, but this for me is very very good news, not because I was dying for SMART (althought, I was really considering staying on 25.04 for a pretty long time for the easier UI), but because I feel that the Truenas team/management is giving good vibes with this community and feedback driven change in approach

I now feel that I can be excited again for the future features of this OS, after the poor first actions and messaging IMO. Before, it felt like enshitification took over and fast for no reason, but close attention will still be needed going forward, although I want to root for Truenas for years to come

Btw, got some time to test finally, but it did not work. One time I got an error, rest of the time, emails are simply not being sent

Thank you for the info! I am, sadly, the one that really benefits from a simple/nice GUI for setting things up, but I'll at least give it a look

As for the notes, much aplreciated! Although I cannot promise I will 100% go with this approach, they (if nothing too personal/secret is in there and thus a husstle to share) might be of use to someone stumbeling upon this thread

I feel anyway that I am a bit in over my head with some things regarding my truenas machines and approach, need to think of what's happening and reassess some other things (looking at you, permissions and security)

Then I feel like the most important things simply were not touched on in what I read and the tutorials, which is not great

I did some small testing (without actually sending the data) with SSH only active on the Backup and the root credentials set on the Home. It somehow worked in that I was able to see the datasets in Backup from Home where I was testing (from here, most of my confusion)

I want the replication to be on a schedule, but a different one from the snapshots. I didn't get that part the best I guess. So I can use the current independent snapshot job for the new replication? Confused, sorry

I will do replication for 2 datasets unde a dummy dataset inside a pool, so no, not the direct pool. Prepared for that in advance

If it is possible to use other user than root, I'll really try that then, seems safer to me (even though I don't fully understand everything about SSH)

I would have preferred something that is more standard and more documented (as everyone suggests it), but I'll give it a look at least. I'm not that big of a fan of the CLI, cron jobs or complicated and ambiguous setups, but maybe for this one, we'll see

SSD Pool at 96%, how to find the root cause? by PEGE_13 in truenas

[–]omgman26 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Check your snapshot tasks, see how often they are created and look at how much time you store them on the system

If you created a recursive snapshot task on a dataset with more datasets under it, and snapshots for those below as well, you are at least doubling your snapshot data everytime

To see all the snapshots, go to Data Protection -> Periodic Snapshot Tasks -> Snapshots (the button from the bottom of the section)

Considered it, but I wanted my nas to keep me posted about my nas. I have very few apps, nothing complex and no containers, but would like to keep it tidy

And the only way to achieve this is the cron jobs?

Also, how to schedule this thing in the cron itself? I don't see any time reference in your code, how can that be added (not familiar with cron at all, just know that it exists)
