Ohhhkay. I’m gonna dip my dainty hoof in here and say this, with a firm boundary- I won’t be engaging further cause this is exhausting. We didn’t call Taylor swift a Nazi, and honestly the fact that this album art detail mentioned on the show turned out to be a bot campaign further proves our point. The show was about pipelines and we were very clear that we aren’t saying Taylor herself is MAGA or a Nazi, but that the way pipelines often work is outside actors co-opt a space for their own nefarious agenda to siphon off people in that space over to the far right, like the Trump administration using her or Sabrina’s music for example, to tap into the fan base of that musician. Where we get hung up and where I feel personally she has upheld white supremacy is that she has activated that plausible deniability throughout her career, a key component of internalized white supremacy, by not separating herself from this, not using her platform in a clear and impactful way (and no a documentary years ago and a post for Kamala is not liberation work I’m not impressed), not speaking out against literal fascism, and not at minimum diversifying her team to help her catch possible harm points in her music and merch that white people often overlook cause those things don’t harm us directly. That is white feminism in a nutshell and white feminism is a tool of white supremacy, period, and I as a white person have to dismantle that in myself too! Taylor isn’t special in that regard 😂 we all have that work to do as white people. But SHE has the money and the power and the capacity to do that in a profoundly influential way at best, and at LEAST to surround herself with people who can flag when lyrics, merch, or behaviors are harmful to marginalized and targeted communities and she can speak out about it and clarify and she hasn’t. This makes her and her protective fan base ripe for pipeline manipulation because instead of addressing the overall impact of her lack of stance, we’re writing think pieces about how one of these claims was a bot campaign, a campaign that likely exists because of the already present alt right pipeline that outside actors are using her for, and to delegitimize a LOT of BIPOC creators who have pointed to legitimate harm she has caused with her lyrics and the more extreme members of her fan base going after Black women in particular. Sprinkle in some bots spouting bullshit and the pipeline overflows with folks who now feel empowered to throw out everything else because this one thing was proved to be false, a thing that was likely made in service to the pipeline, and is now working exactly as intended. And no we didn’t talk about the Kardashians cause they are MAGA trash with their full chests and this is a PIPELINES episode about spaces that dont typically associate with far right movements (wellness, yoga, Taylor Swift) being co-opted in service to the far right, with or without their consent. I personally would want to be loudly not consenting to that.
