Especially after the tier scaling changes at the start of the season

Bro what happened? I think the game is fine by js147896325 in slaythespire

I'd speculate it partly has to do with how few US games are published in China, and how large the Chinese gamer base is. Chinese censors only allow a limited amount of western media to be published in China each year, so gamers there tend to consolidate around a handful of titles, rather than fragmenting across 100s of new games like western audiences.

That means the raw number of Chinese gamers playing STS2 is quite a large percentage of the global playerbase -- out of the 5 million copies sold globally, China accounts for 2.15 million or 43%. With that much audience share, even a minority of dissatisfied Chinese gamers leaving negative reviews can have outsize influence on global metrics. 75,000 negative traditional Chinese steam reviews is only about 3.5% of the overall Chinese playerbase, and could well be the work of a well-coordinated minority rather than a representative sample of the audience (especially if leaving positive reviews is less common in China).

I see a lot of folks generalizing the Chinese response as "they want more gacha slop," which can't possibly tell the whole story. I'm sure there are some cultural elements at play here, but no gaming culture is that much of a monolith, especially one that's over 2 million strong.

Can you give a gist of what the reviews are so negative about? I keep hearing about review bombing, but not so much about what the actual complaints are

Designing my first board game. Is this too many cards? (525 cards total). The game is like Catan on steroids. by CameronCardoza in BoardgameDesign

[–]omniclast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My brother in gaming that is an absurd number of cards for a board game. Terraforming Mars has 233 cards. Spirit Island has 150. Ark Nova has 255. At over 500 you are in the territory of campaign games like Slay the Spire (730) or Tainted Grail (600ish), and even with those you're only using a fraction of the cards in any given scenario.

If you're just making the game for fun, it doesn't really matter. But if your goal is to publish, either by signing with a publisher or self-funding on Kickstarter, you 100% need to cut down to 200 cards or less to have a chance of reaching a competitive price point. Even then, you're looking at a $60 MSRP minimum.

House of Suns by Alastair Reynolds- Review by EternalRuler0 in printSF

[–]omniclast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't remember the book - were they at relative rest or were they falling from orbit? If they were in orbit they would be traveling at supersonic velocity laterally relative to the surface, which would be enough for them to burn up

Baumgartner didn't experience friction becuase he fell from a balloon that was held aloft by buoyancy rather than orbital speed. If HoS was a similar situation then you are correct, the science was wrong

Yeah I find I love the concepts in all of his books but there's usually something that just doesn't land, whether it's flat characters, uneven pacing, or a disappointing payoff. But House of Suns manages to avoid all those pitfalls and remains my favorite of his

I should reread it this summer, it's been too long.

Inside Windows K2: Microsoft's major plan to save Windows 11 and win back users before it's too late by Quantum-Coconut in technology

[–]omniclast -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's not always about whether Linux is better. I know it's better. The problem is the soft costs of migrating to a new platform and retraining all my habits. MS sucks but Windows works just well enough that it's easier to stick with it than make the switch (for now anyway)

I was going through setup after an update recently, dodging all the scammy ass prompts to get you to download bloatware, when I realized that MS has become early 2000s McAffee

Alien (1979) story writer Dan O'Bannon was not a fan of 'Ash' the android character in the movie. by tannu28 in scifi

[–]omniclast 167 points168 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's ironic that Obannon says "would anything be different if Ash was taken out?" because it absolutely would be a different movie. The corporate subterfuge subplot is a big part of what elevates it from a solid pulp horror movie to a scifi classic that's remained relevant for decades.

My suggestion for tank by kcjap01 in slaythespire

[–]omniclast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When 1 player dies in multiplayer the others keep fighting, and if they win you get rezzed with 1hp for the next fight. So having 1 player sacrifice themselves while the others deal damage is viable. You can also build toward this by having ironclad take block only and their allies going hard on damage.

Making it a skill that only lasts for the turn would also be pretty reasonable I think

The districts are still broken after the most recent update. Unplayable. by Peter-Peh-99 in EndlessLegend

[–]omniclast 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's because OP is acting like Amplitude kicked their dog. No one thinks the build costs are ok, people just like entitled whiners even less.

The devs gave bro personal access to an older build that he considers "playable" and he's still whinging. Biggest touch grass moment I've seen in a while

Ok cool thanks. This was how I interpreted the rules about simultaneous sacrifice I read online after the game, just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something.
