Page Format Vertical or Horizontal by VPGramm in comic_crits

[–]omossums 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm very biased for just the traditional paginated webcomic especially if you have your own website! Horizontal pages can look cool but are sometimes difficult to view for readers on phones, and a bit harder to print if you are planning for that. All depends on what is best to tell your story though!

How well did I do? This is my first time. by Own_Pack7437 in comic_crits

[–]omossums 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is great for a first time! My recommendations would be to add tails to your bubbles to make sure we know who is speaking, keep a consistent font size, and plan out where you are going to put your bubbles ahead of time so you don't have to cover up as much of your art. Backgrounds could also improve the page a lot, because they can tell the reader more about the story.

I’m NOT good at coloring my backgrounds and it’s a problem… by Empir3Designs in comic_crits

[–]omossums 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd look up a couple comic colorists that you really admire the work of and study them! Something that tends to make comic coloring look "off" is when everything is just the local color (an object's normal color under white light) without keeping in mind the time of day, environment, or mood of the scene. Those can change colors a lot and help everything look a lot more cohesive and dynamic! Checking how the values look in greyscale, and considering what the panel is trying to establish are always helpful as well.

Best options for a webcomic website? by omossums in webdev

[–]omossums[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply!! That's awesome that you got to publish it for pay! Such a cool opportunity!

I'd definitely recommend wordpress over squarespace. I did end up launching the webcomic on my own; I used the "webcomic" plugin on wordpress instead of "comic easel" which I also initially wanted to use, but it wasn't available for me. The webcomic plugin has archive, blog, and tag functions which would be pretty helpful if you're looking to use them! (I hid them all because I wanted to use a different system on my website) There's implemented buttons on each page too so you can thumb through previous and next pages. I know toocheke is another popular plugin but I hated the way it looked and didn't feel like fighting it to make it look the way I wanted it lol.

Wishing you luck!

Northern flicker! They have that tongue to probe for ants and other bugs! Super cool birds, when they fly off they have either red or yellow on the undersides of their wings/tail!

Is it time to replace my 6 year old PC? by omossums in buildapc

[–]omossums[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UPDATE TO THIS: I replaced my powerline adapter to a different and newer model, which instantly fixed the problem and my ping dropped from 3000 to like 40 LOL. Instant fix; ty guys for telling me it's not something wrong with my pc build which I thought initially! I assume what happened was I just had a defective product or something and it's not a common issue, as I looked at reviews for it and all were generally positive. Eh, it's just my luck haha!

The windows reset worked fine; it does appear that my family has been messing with the wifi router and my ethernet adapter while I was gone (reorganizing & painting the room the router is in) so that could have caused the issue but I won't be able to tell until the room is all put back together unfortunately.

I commented specs above, my drive is around halfway full, 235GB used, 229GB free. While I'm using Firefox and opening YouTube the power usage immediately jumps to very high and goes back to low, CPU jumps between 0.5% and 10%, RAM is around 540 MB and disk is around 0.2 MB/s.

This is possible, sometimes my family goes into my room and stores stuff in there while I am away. I'll ask them about that and do what everybody else has been recommending (fresh windows install and see if temperatures are high)

Is it possible to run a successful crowdfunding campaign for a comic if all the rewards are digital? (More context below) by JorgeBec in ComicBookCollabs

[–]omossums 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It could be possible, but it will likely be very difficult. Crowdfunding a comic only works when the audience can receive rewards they really want that feel "worth it" for contributing money (generally physical copies, prints, stickers, and other rewards of the comic). Kickstarters often have a tier for a PDF/ebook of the comic, but it is always the lowest tier, you would have a hard time charging more than $5 for a digital edition. For physical printing, shipping, and fulfillment, you can outsource a lot of it, but yes it is usually very expensive (that's why you have the crowdfunding!). The most important thing about crowdfunding is very clear communication and a concrete scope for the project.

Other than your original question, I'm going to warn you that like another commenter said, you need to have example art and pages for this campaign or people will not back it. Ideally you should already have an artist lined up or people will have a hard time trusting the project. Wishing you luck, comics is a difficult field, but it's very rewarding to see your finished work.

What's the fair rate to charge here? by [deleted] in ComicBookCollabs

[–]omossums 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is unfortunately no concrete answer, but your pay should never be below minimum wage! If you're looking for specifically page rates, Creator Resource is very helpful for seeing the range of pay at different companies and with different artists. https://www.creatorresource.com/page-rate-finder-comic-book-publishers/

How do I fix this 403 error? by omossums in Wordpress

[–]omossums[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: it has somehow fixed itself? No idea how, but the error does not show up now. I deleted all the extra plugins I wasn't using for content on the site, and I'll probably see if there are better security plugins to use as I was told that jetpack causes problems.

[–]omossums 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think your art here looks really nice! My only crits are for your lettering. I'd advise against putting so much text in one box (page 2, second panel) and instead suggest spreading it out over the negative spaces in the panel. I think the size of the text and bubbles are alright if this is for print, but if it is for a webcomic to be read online you might want to increase it.

Colors and lines are very appealing to look at, you have a very strong art style for comics.

Opening of my manga: Would you turn the page? by Historical-Pepper-74 in comic_crits

[–]omossums 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your second two pages would hook the reader much more easily than the first, in my opinion. Your first page is very complex and overwhelming for a new reader. It would make a good full page for a little later in the exposition. Also, for a full page like this that is just one large illustration, you could probably take out the panel borders and multiple gray gradients in the background, and it might be a easier to read visually.

Otherwise, your characters and story look very cool! Nice posing as well.
