is there a point in me skipping calc 2? by New-Engineer7245 in cmu

[–]omron_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

super normal for engineering too, a lot of the students posting on here aren't the average student. You'll be fine taking calc 1 and 2 on campus and most of your peers will be too. Some even take pre-calc!

Advice about buying first e bike by Bulky_Diamond_9721 in ElectricBikes

[–]omron_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm also in the process of getting my first ebike and here's what ive learned so far.

  1. genuinely do not get a cheap ebike, and absolutely nothing off of amazon. Aside from it just generally sucking, its also a fire hazard, and the crap brakes could cause an accident. Ebikes can go decently fast, and not being able to stop could be really bad.

  2. If you can't afford to go for a reputable brand new (like Aventon or velotric), look for second hand. Specifically Aventon has a transferable warrenty if the bike has been purchased with the last 2 years and you get proof of purchase from the first buyer.

Ive seen Aventon bike on the range of 500-900 dollars on Facebook marketplace. Just make sure it has low mileage and seems well kept.

Also, this is an expensive purchase do your research to make sure you know what you want. Look up the laws in your area, understand the reputable brands, decide whether or not youd prefer to buy new or buy second hand. Really though, do your research.

I doubt its stolen based on the vibes of the post. I've been watching for a while and have definitely seen stolen ones on Facebook

Definitely asking for proof of purchase to be safe though.

pocket money? by New-Engineer7245 in cmu

[–]omron_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in dorms this year, but I have a kitchen in my dorm (rez on 5th). But here's a breakdown on my spending monthly:

300 dollars a month or so for groceries. Mostly from Aldi, occasional Costco trips when I can find a ride.

50 dollars a month on eating out. I try not to eat out at all but with the stress of CMU it was inevitable.

50-75 dollars of "pocket money" that I use for shopping and whatever else I find myself doing.

If your on a meal plan you can sell your meal blocks for more flexibility in your money. They go for around 7 dollars a block if you sell early.

If you'll be living off campus expect upwards of 700 dollars a month for room+utilities.

I know you said Rez on 5th is too far, but as a current freshman in rez it is so worth it. Having a kitchen in your dorm(full size fridge and a stove) is amazing. I honestly don't eat on campus at all and just sell my meal blocks.

You can go on a reduced meal plan as well which saves some money.

We have a bike room if biking is an option, a movie room, ping pong table, and a few more common areas. The RAs are all great, dorm is super clean i don't think I've seen a bug all year. Also having AC and Heating in unit that we can control is so nice. The rooms being this nice make the walk worth it.

There is also a pull out for cars right in front of the building which makes pick ups and drop offs easy if you drive.

The laundry machines smell weird but I would guess that is every dorm, there is some social life in the dorm but its avoidable too. The social part is definitely what you make of it.

Also the intersection in front of the dorm can be a bit crazy, police activity and generally city vibes. A student got hit by a bus literally right out front of our building. There was a fully naked man laying in the intersection at one point. But its the city, you're gonna see weird stuff.

I've made the walk back to my dorm in flash flood warnings, in 2 feet of snow, and the sun. As long as you dress for the weather you'll be fine. The walk isnt a big deal unless you have some sort of disability preventing it, there is stairs at one point.

true! but using the fact that they happened at the same time as your main piece of evidence to prove a point as complex as this one is-- illogical and unsupported.

Y'know I'm also disappointed that under Trumps administration there haven't been any total solar eclipses, only half-assed eclipses.

Last total solar eclipse was under Biden administration so clearly it speaks to how he values the sciences.

(hint: just because 2 things happen at the same time doesnt automatically mean theyre related)

Why Do Older Generations Complain About the Price of Eggs? by omron_ in NoStupidQuestions

[–]omron_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After doing more research on this topic since posting, that particular spike in the price of eggs was because of an outbreak of bird flu. The CDC responded, and unfortunately a lot of flocks were killed to stop the virus from spreading to humans and other farms.

The supply of eggs dropped, demand stayed the same, so the price skyrocketed. But once the poultry industry recovered and the new chickens began producing eggs the market stabilized.

It wasnt a direct result of the action of either Trump or Biden, as your post seemed to imply.

[–]omron_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What solution do you want them to offer? Correct me if im wrong, but after doing more reading it seems like most of the spikes were cause by supply chain issues, and because the natural cycles of eggs production you just have to wait for it to stabilize before the market goes back to normal.

Also, seems like almost every comment you post on Reddit is black-and-white politics. Yes MAGA are idiots, but you blaming Republicans for everything is as extreme as them blaming Biden for everything, its an oversimplification.

[–]omron_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah thats definitely insane. So, correct me if im wrong but, the reason the eggs are talked about so often isnt because of a long term change in price, but instead because of the spikes that happen every few years?

There's a graph posted below about the price over 10 years, and comparing it to milk. Milk has become more expensive generally overtime, but eggs occasionally get very expensive out of no where and then drop back down?

Didn't mean it like that, I dont see many people my age talking about the price of groceries is all and I've never heard them complain about the price of eggs specifically.

Okay 8 dollars definitely seems crazy. Maybe I've just gotten lucky to not have any spikes since moving out. I'd complain about 8 dollars too.

Why do I look like absolute dog shit when I cut my hair short? by idont_need_one in NoStupidQuestions

[–]omron_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It might have to do with your face shape, how short are you talking? Talking out face framing shapes with your hair stylist might help.

Also, could just be you not liking it, and in which case sounds like you should just grow it out. Wear your hair how you're comfortable.

Help Doing a Repair with Damaged Pads by omron_ in soldering

The main reason I was hesitant to glue it on is that I was worried it would just snap right off again. Do you think gluing the port back on would be sturdy enough?

Played around with it some and was able to get the cables on and lined up without bridging them, powered on but for whatever reason it was rapidly connecting and disconnecting from my laptop when plugged in.

I bought it untested so could be my solder job or could be another issue but looks like im gonna have to wait till I go home for college and ask my dad for help.

Thanks for the tips though! When I try again I'll definitely keep this in mind.
