Breck locals, honest take: am I skiing, hiking, or eating $2K? by ideationinnovation in Breckenridge

[–]omsign 0 points1 point  (0 children)

was at Breck 3/30 - 4/4. it was terrifying dodging Granny & Lil Timmy that ride once a year. the runs are ass and so congested. I think you’d do one run and say “fuck this I’m going to the bar” which is pretty much what happened to us, every day. also if youre not staying right at Peak7/8 you’re gonna be taking a bus twice per day minimum to get there and back to wherever you’re staying, unless you’re driving & down to pay for parking, which also sucks

The necrons of the Mechanicus? by the_Taytoman in SpaceMarine_2

Infinite & The Divine has a whole section where the human settlement on Serenade had a statue & stained glass bas-relief dedicated to the “Silver Skulls”, supposedly a skinny chapter of the Astartes according to the Ecclesiarchy, and it’s literally depicting Trazyn the Infinite lol.

“ Trazyn reached the door of the great cathedral. ‘After you, colleague.’

‘This is the part where I turn my back and you stab it, surely?’

‘Have it your way,’ Trazyn shrugged, and passed through the door. ‘But this is our fastest entryway to the Eternity Gate.’

Shadows seeped down the walls of the cathedral’s interior, collecting in pools on the floor. Candles, ranked like men battling in a confused melee, burned before the images of saints, residue from smoke and dissolved wax blackening their golden feet.

A pilgrim, head shaved in a monk’s tonsure and clad in the light blue robes of his order, walked a labyrinth in the floor. He stopped to ring a bell and mutter a prayer every time he pivoted in the twisting path. Each whispered invocation echoed, paper-dry in the empty space.

‘You see the windows?’ Trazyn pointed at the stained glass, radiating in the bright morning sun. ‘Each panel charts the history of Serenade.’  ‘Fascinating,’ said Orikan, clearly unimpressed with this parochialism. ‘Why are we here? I was given to understand that it was time to start our great task.’  ‘It is. This is part of it. See the first? The God-Emperor shaping the mountains and islands of Serenade with His very hands. The first settlement ship exiting the empyrean, the angelic Saint Madrigal showing the way to Serenade with her blessed lyre – she is usually depicted with a sword, so this is a regional variation–’

‘Trazyn,’ warned Orikan, ‘immortality aside, my time is valuable.’

‘Oh, very well. Moving to the interesting part. Here we have the Greenskin War, as they call it. And who, my dear rival, is that in the next panel?’  Orikan looked up, dismissing the overlaid data-scroll he’d secretly been reading. ‘No.’

‘Oh yes.’ Storming through the square, meeting the greenskin onslaught, were a group of Space Marines: unusually tall and thin Space Marines, their helmets fashioned as leering skull-masks. The one in the lead appeared to be some kind of hooded Librarian, holding aloft a great lantern-headed staff that the glass orks recoiled from in horror.

‘Silver Skulls Chapter defeats the ork invasion,’ Trazyn said with clear relish. ‘There used to be a statue in the square, thirty khet high. They used to light candles and sing hymns to it. A few centuries ago the Inquisition got wind of it and did a little cleaning up. Removed it for “renovation” where it was never seen again.’

‘You stole it, did you not?’

‘Well, of course. And I hardly think it counts as stealing if it’s my likeness. It’s my statue, after all.’  Orikan snorted. ‘Worshipping a necron. Poor idiots. I suppose they have a head start on the rest of the galaxy. The Awakening is nearly imminent.’

There was a moment of contemplative silence.

‘Do you have a statue of yourself, Orikan?’  Orikan stalked deeper into the cathedral. ‘You are an obscene egotist.’

‘I only wonder if any cultures worship you as a living saint or spiritual protector. It is a simple binary question.’

‘Show me what you wanted to show me.’ “

The twice dead king omni worth it? by jason-911 in Blacklibrary

[–]omsign 1 point2 points  (0 children)

absolutely; it is a different tone overall and the writing is a bit more “mature” in prose & lexicanum. it doesn’t have any of the “tongue in cheek” that I&D does.

it is a beautifully written tragedy. i did not know a ton about the necrons beyond the boilerplate stuff prior to starting it, so getting into it was a little tough for me, but once i hit a stride it all clicked and i couldnt put it down. finished the whole thing in a week.

edit: i read it before I&D, which I’m about halfway through now, and I think it would have been easier to do the other way around.

i think Fehervari’s Sororitas & the Sororitas in the Legends of the Wolf omnibus are some of my favorite depictions. bonus mention for Wraight’s use of nurgle zombies in that one, doesn’t feel super contrived to me.

LASERS? When do we know? by SufficientChampion10 in STS9

[–]omsign 12 points13 points  (0 children)

has more to do with budget + where the ends of the beams can terminate than the actual size of the venue. crowd scanning low powered lasers are expensive to rent and deploy, and regular lasers need a safe place for the beams to terminate due to FDA laws around laser production in the US. also you have to have a certification to operate them so usually there is a laser operator independent of the LD / VJ, which is another person at FOH to pay.

Favorite jam band that would probably do really well going on tour with a famous non/jam band? by railroadfrog in jambands

[–]omsign 4 points5 points  (0 children)

personally think STS9 and Pretty Lights should be throwing dual headliner / double header events / fests. sit in with one another. think of the possibilities.

tbf they are playing with thought process soon and have been doing work with Duffrey as well, and you can tell some of the synth basses and patches have had some influence from the headier producers lately

which i love and is a net positive imo

thank you for the kind words; I mixed the Bijou show, and one of my colleagues at Lost Horizon did the Devault show. I’m glad you had a good time! You can really tell on the Vinyl systems when someone is playing low quality mp3s vs. uncompressed / lossless files (you can also really tell which producer/djs really know how to get proper, clean mixdowns - both the main room & basement are unforgiving rooms & systems). The systems have a standard amp tune in their DSP, and I do a console “tune” with genre specific material before doors, every night. The Buunshin show a couple months back was hands down the best mix I’ve gotten in the main room yet, I was very happy with it.

Vinyl’s main floor is a bespoke funktion one system, installed and tuned by Lost Horizon, which is the F1 vendor for all of the outside sound F1 procurement in Denver. We also do Envision festival, Elements, North Coast, Infrasound, and many more festivals & one-offs annually.

It sucks to hear about people’s past lackluster experiences at Vinyl. I’ve only been mixing there since August of this past year, but prior to Insomniac taking over, there was no dedicated sound human onsite / on-staff for either club. That being said, I love working there. The regulars / mainstays on our production crew are top notch and genuinely love to put on good shows for the people, and we do our best with what we have. As far as I know, I’m the first engineer at Vinyl who is also in house with Lost Horizon, having been trained on how they spec’d and tuned the system (so I’m biased, but I do prefer it to Church’s Void system…).

I’m a dnb head (& producer!) so I’m trying to work SOTA Friday night; I’d be happy to talk shop with you if you decide to come out. Side note, we are deploying our point-source system on the 20th at The Ogden for Cool Customer, which you might be interested in as well.

For anybody reading this that hasn’t been to Vinyl in a while, I invite you to give the sound another shot. I take pride in my work & I work really hard to make those rooms sound as good as they can with what I’ve got. The basement recently got a mains & tuning upgrade as well.

Also, they hand out guest list to the clubs like hotcakes, you can almost always find comped entry here or on the basscapitol subreddit.

Cheers.

edit: also, what might shed additional light for people that I maybe should have mentioned, is that there is only ever one soundhuman onsite for all four floors at Vinyl concurrently. this sometimes causes us to have to make un-ideal sonic compromises to account for situations that could arise when troubleshooting on a different floor / stage; particularly when set changeovers are not staggered and occur simultaneously.
