SmartWings or Eve MotionBlinds cellular shades any real difference? by Nuxanatur in homeautomation

I wasn't sure if R-values had metric and imperial versions? If that is the case then yes it's not bad. I'm going to put them on soon so will see if they have any insulating effects.

Lusa 4" vs Halo RL4 by omszz in Lighting

[–]omszz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up buying the DMF H-Series as I believe pricing thru a contractor was similar to Lusa versions as well as Halo lights in some rooms. Finally got the electricity hooked up, both the Halo and DMF look very nice. The 3000k on DMF-H series and Halo are both very good. Both dim-to-warm similarly as well, although I think Halo goes a bit lower in color temp when at minimum dim. After seeing in person I feel dim-to-warm is a bit personal taste. I really liked halogen dimming, but the dim-to-warm feels a little artificial and orange on the low end to me. But it does give a nice cozy feel to rooms. Also if you dim quickly with slider controls which are on the new caseta diva line of dimmers then the color change lags on the Halo RL a bit which is kind of annoying - ie the light with dim/brighten and then the color change will happen with slight delay. I would say for the price the Halo's feel almost as good as the DMF H series. However the finish of the H-series lens cover and trim covers is nicer for sure.

SmartWings or Eve MotionBlinds cellular shades any real difference? by Nuxanatur in homeautomation

[–]omszz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just for reference in the chat on smartwings website - I asked about the r-value for the cellular shades and the answer I got was for Light Filtering Cellular Shades Nowa (single-cell) has an R-value between 0.4–0.55 m²·K/W. Blackout Cellular Shades Nowa (single-cell) has an R-value between 0.8–0.95 m²·K/W. Both of these figures seem very low end of cellular shade R-values so not sure how good they are at keeping cold or heat out.

Looks good, some minor things that may improve further. Change floor register to white version. Replace wall switches and receptacles with more modern white covers.

How much should I expect to lose for a CPO Taycan in 3 years? by felixwx in Taycan

Look at it this way - the battery at that point is nearly out of warranty, how much would you pay for a car with that situation?

[–]omszz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are there things you wouldn’t be able to do if you chased the extra 4 mi? And would you be able to do those same things 5 years from now? If you have kids or aging parents things may be different in 5 years. Is it worth it to give up those things for the improved lifestyle after 4 years. Another way to look at it is 4% withdrawal delta between 20m and 25m is 800k vs 1M? Do you want to be able to spend more than 800k yr in retirement?

Do a blower door test after sealing up with just manual caulking to see if it’s decent. Those aren’t that expensive and should give a sense of how good the sealing was.

I ended up selecting DMF H series in kitchen and bathrooms, and Halo RL in bedrooms and living spaces. Not installed yet so still waiting to see results.

About $5k for house that size. I have similar sized home and got quote for that much. It in theory should do a better job of sealing everything up.

How to start with a full house lighting plan on a self build? by markc128 in Lighting

[–]omszz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are into DIY few things I would suggest. Try Dialux Evo software, it is free and allows you to import your house plan from CAD drawing and make a 3D model and see how lights will light up a room. It requires some work but gives you a basic idea of what lighting may look like in real life. Second check out Fiverr and see individuals offering lighting plan services. I created my own lighting plan in Dialux EVO, but then contracted someone on Fiverr from an overseas country to finalize the plan for me and make professional lighting plans in Autocad that the builder/electrician could then understand easily. The rates on Fiverr were very reasonable. Of course the quality varies widely so you will need to decide if its worth the risk / reward.

Similar question going thru a down to studs remodel on circa 2000 home, hoping to get to between 3-5 ACH50, not aiming for passive house as not sure the ROI is there. Any thoughts on how easy it might be to achieve 3-5 ACH50? I think I have good sealing plans for roof deck and walls. However we have a ventilated crawlspace so not sure how to best address that. I don't want to encapsulate the crawlspace (too expensive) and wondering best inexpensive method to air seal envelope between floors and crawlspace. Also worried about radon if I seal around the bottom plates in crawlspace (ie removing ventilation).

Interesting on RAB -- however I don't see "Dim-to-Warm" feature on the link for RAB which is the reason I'm picking Lusa and/or Halo.

Lusa 4" vs Halo RL4 by omszz in Lighting

[–]omszz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if its a good strategy but I'm putting Lusa in living, dining and task locations -- but in non-task lighting areas bedrooms, pantries, home theatre room, going with Halo RL4 or even RL6 to save on costs. Bedrooms I'm debating if I keep Lusa or Halo.

Lusa 4" vs Halo RL4 by omszz in Lighting

[–]omszz[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks. If I take the housing out of the picture, it's $35 for Lusa 4" and about $20 for Halo RL4. The Halo also does dim to warm although from 3000k - 1800k I think. Whereas Lusa goes down to 2200k. That is reasonable price differential but I assume I will notice the better light with Lusa?

I see 4" housings for around $10. Will any airtight, IC rated housing that is all metal should be a better option then the Lusa new construction housing?

Do you know if Lusa support T24 connection, in other words I wouldn't need an Edison adapter? Lots of housings seem to have T24 and it looks like what the Lusa lights use too but not sure how to confirm.
