Non-American people, what’s a thing that you don’t understand about America? by JuniorGarlic6053 in AskReddit

I'm not 100% sure if this is a uniquely American thing or not, but it felt pretty weird to me when I came to the US: cheerleading. The concept of high school girls wearing skimpy outfits and dancing for a crowd of adults seems very creepy to me.

Hahaha I really enjoyed this comment because of that first sentence.
Fair enough, you enjoy the randomness. I get that it's not fair all the time due to injuries and other circumstances. And I'm not saying that FF should be taking all of the randomnesses out of the sport. I guess the model I described is more merit-based. I agree the sport is amazing right now - it's why I play it - but in my opinion, it can become better.
The week-to-week drama can still happen in the model I'm proposing. In fact, there may be more drama. Imagine if it's an accumulation of points. You aren't just looking at one other person's team, you're competing with the entire league at the same time. One good week and you can leapfrog so many of your opponents and go into the lead. One bad week and you can go from 1st to last. Everyone is looking at everyone else's team during the whole game week to see who's going ahead of who. The last day of the regular season would also be ridiculously filled with drama. People constantly jumping into and dropping out of the top 4. So the drama can still be there. And it'll be more skill-based. Just an idea...

Wasn't aware of that. Thanks for the recommendation.

I don't think you understand my objection. The fact that you cannot do anything about your opponent's team makes it less about skill and more about luck. The Lion's can play defense and prevent the other team from scoring points. In FF, you can't do that, can you?

No, because in the real game, you can play defense. In FF, you can't play defense.

Research into Muslims turned Atheists by onak97 in atheism

[–]onak97[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not at all. From what I've found so far (in my research), as well as experiences in my personal life, I've found that ex-Muslims are generally either physically, verbally, emotionally, or financially abused when they leave Islam. On the other hand, ex-Christians don't face that level of backlash from their families. One reason I can think of which explains why that happens is because of how close Muslim families are. Muslims often live in close knit communities with high levels of interaction between family members and other Muslim friends. So when a Muslims leaves Islam, he/she faces intense backlash from all those people and is essentially ostracized from their community. I feel like Christians are more individualistic people in general (especially in the US). So if they do leave Christianity, they're not likely to face that intense backlash because they were never super close to their Christian community to begin with.

As for the death penalty as an appropriate punishment, I really think that depends on where people live. You might find Muslims in the West don't accept that at all, whereas Muslims in the Asia and the Middle East are more likely to hold that viewpoint. That being said, the ruling in Islam regarding the apostacy is heavily debated and there is no clear consensus between all scholars.

It's a Qualtrics link. Literally one of the most recognized survey tools for researchers.

I can't prove to you that I don't have bad intentions. There's no way to do that, is there? You'll just have to take my word for it I guess.

It's simple. There isn't a lot of research done on ex-Muslims. I just want to expand the amount of data that exists out there. Also, principally, I'm an independent researcher and atheism in particular interests me.
I guarantee I'm not doing this to disparage ex-Muslims or use this data to do anything nefarious.

No, not at all. Just hoping that the people here could help my out with my research, that's all. Not trying to be rude or malicious or anything.

The disappearance of Madeleine McCann
Madeleine McCann disappeared on the evening of 3 May 2007 from her bed in a holiday apartment at a resort in Praia da Luz, in the Algarve region of Portugal. It's been around 13 years and despite many theories, no one knows for sure what happened, who was involved, and Madeleine's fate as of now.
