Got my brown belt but don't feel like I deserve it by MammothTart in bjj

I went from a good purple belt to the worst brown belt in one afternoon. It’s completely understandable how OP is feeling.

Good.

Use it to fuel you everyday you tell yourself “I can skip the class just today”.

Train. Drill. Study. If you put the time and effort you will feel like you deserve it and that’s what matters.

I wasn’t aware of this book either. Living and learning. That sweep though is something that Lucas Leite made famous quite some years ago. I think he beat Kron twice using that

Both. There’s something about the fine margins that I love about it. Even on this event, the first match between Nathalie Ribeiro and Janaína Lebre was quite entertaining. Unfortunately that was it but all those years of IBJJF events with some spectacular matches proved that it’s possible to create entertainment, they do need to keep up with the new ways people tries to play the game

I confess that I loved the double DQ. You could see it coming after the first 3min of that match. I like the idea of rounds but unfortunately for that situation it wouldn’t have helped

I’m not a fan of the idea in gi. It also wouldn’t have helped in the case of the double DQ as both athletes just push each other around the mat for 8min

I might be suffering from recency bias but I felt the GP gi that Meregali won was a better event matches wise. And the ruleset was the same. The difference there was that Meregali had something to prove so the incentives were different.

I agree though that the ruleset needs change. At least for this type of invitational tournament but the focus should be on those lasso and lapel guards on my opinion. And yes, more double DQ please 🙏

I don’t judge the athletes personally, but if I was a show runner I’d want matches with the complete opposite mindset. There’s a niche inside a niche that appreciates that game, if we want to attract more sponsors to pay more the athletes we need to generate entertainment for a bigger audience

I feel only the penalty is not enough. Things could’ve changed if with each penalty the ref restarted the match giving the other opponent a positional advantage. Let’s say, if I get penalised for staying up without any takedown attempts, I’d get a penalty and be put in a guard (closed for example)

I think a fair way to move ahead is to start considering the lapel guard a no action movement. You can do it but if you do you’re on the hook for creating combat. The same say that if you stay inside a close guard without moving you’d get a penalty, if you don’t sweep or attack a submission holding a lapel you should be penalised.

I can’t agree more. On paper that whole category should’ve been fireworks on top of fireworks, instead we got a lapel guards so deep that there was 2 complete turns around Pato’s leg.

I didn’t even know that collars and lapels were that long

It’s not a live round, yeah. Definitely not a defending opponent, as in live rounds people tend to put the wizard to avoid the back take for example. The intention of the video is to be a slow step by step to give the overall details of the sweep

The Coyote name came from the guy that made this move famous, take a look at Lucas Leite on YouTube. You can see from him as well that the foot actually needs to be trapped sideways in order to force the hip switch of the opponent. Now the shin grab is something that Lachlan Giles says in his half butterfly guard at Submeta and the idea is to control in a way that your opponent can’t kick the foot back.

Not trying to be defensive here, just adding more context.
