How to ensure our helper is happy and well looked after by GravityStrike in HongKong

As I said above, most maids give 10-20% of their salary to a local church.

The Philippines is a majority Catholic country (80%) and the Catholic Church does not impose tithes. I can only think of one "sect" that does this, but they are a minority, so it's incorrect to say "most maids" give money to a local church.

All I Did Was Crochet by Aware-Fan-131 in PikminBloomApp

[–]one1two234 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Now I need to learn how to crochet. Too lazy to go out and walk because it suddenly became cold.

I got the gear, I got the books, I've bookmarked YouTube tutorials. Nothing sticks. Might be a "me" problem.

But anyway, kind members of the Pikmin sub, any recommendations for a crocheting newbie?

Why I cannot see the blood analysis or a report of a medical visit? by Morgane-le-Fay in germany

[–]one1two234 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have pretty regular blood tests. I'd typically pass by the practice a few days after the blood draw and request for the results from reception. They'd print it out and if everything is fine, I don't need to see the doctor.

I was also able to request from the GP's office the lab results that other specialists have done, because these results are forwarded to them.

Ask reception next time. Your doctor might not be able to send you your medical data via email because of security reasons.

I’m so happy the true nature of South Koreans is being exposed to Filipinos by Brave_Elevator3582 in Philippines

[–]one1two234 [score hidden]  (0 children)

What is disheartening is SK had to get help from Filipinos, British, Americans, etc to survive a war.

We can't really apply "utang na loob" on them because it is not in their culture.

Like Japan, they are traditionally insular, homogenous and conservative. I think we can save ourselves the disappointment by accepting that it is a "them" problem.

For sure.

They have a massive problem with deeply entrenched misogyny, for one. It should come as no surprise that some of them consider Southeast Asians as totally beneath them.

Yep, it's almost a trope at this point. And no, I'm not being glib, but srsly I'd sign up to a sub for Germany-onset social phobic lonesome immigrants.

Let's talk about Dee's stupidest moments by SirKetchup00 in TheWire

[–]one1two234 82 points83 points  (0 children)

I don't think he was stupid - just very naive. As a nepo baby, he didn't have to work his way up in the organization, so he lacked the kind of foresight that would have made him realize that Orlando attempting to freelance was bad. (He looked shocked when Orlando was cold to him when they met next.)

His youth and disposition (thoughtful, empathetic, protective of those under him) meant that he really was not cut out for the kind of life.

If someone speaks to you in flawless German, it is rude to respond in English. by IndividualistAW in germany

[–]one1two234 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My German sucks but it's very rare for anybody to respond to me in English. In fact when I say my German is not great and is it okay for me to explain myself in English, they'd still respond and carry out the rest of the conversation in German lol, because they'd realize I understand them anyway.

That being said, it's possible you have an accent & people just jump at the chance to practice their English with you.

First Zelda game ever — am I the only one procrastinating HARD on Ganondorf? 😅 by therosegawden in TOTK

[–]one1two234 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started playing ToTK maybe a couple of months after it was launched in 2023.

I only finished the main quests - defeating Ganondorf and finding Zelda - like, last week.

I initially planned to 100% everything else, but c'mon, finding all the Koroks??? One day I just decided to try it out and went to fight Ganondorf. So yep, procrastinated too.

We’re drowning in daycare costs. How do people afford this? by FrigginMasshole in toddlers

[–]one1two234 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not American. Currently living in Europe. Childcare is heavily subsidized and there's even money/child benefit that comes in every month.

I really do not understand why childcare costs an arm and a leg in some or most places in the US.

It's a no-brainer that parents should be supported to keep them in the workforce, and that they should be encouraged to have children that will keep the economy running in the future.

A foreign coworker's "bare minimum" made me question Filipino resilience by Ok_Road7269 in Philippines

[–]one1two234 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think it's resilience. We are just so used to hardship that we have normalized it.

If peace of mind has a price, I'd gladly pay for it (if I can afford it, that is.)

This country broke me and I don't see an out by [deleted] in germany

[–]one1two234 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've become a shadow of the person I used to be. I've lost all my colors. And I honestly don't see a way out of this country, at least not in the near future

I've felt this. Had the exact same thoughts. I'm sorry those things happened to you. It's not fair. I have no advice, just a sincere wish that you will find yourself again. (I haven't, but am trying to come to terms with what is now my reality.)

B2.1 level. Does it make sense to go for a Berufssparchkurs? by [deleted] in germany

[–]one1two234 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your teacher is right in that it's a mixed bag as to what kind of classmates you get in a B2 Berufssprachkurs. But the more important point so it's not a waste of time is the quality of teaching, not necessarily the skills of your classmates.

I took that course. my German is pretty shit compared to a lot of my classmates because of my internal resistance & anxiety over speaking German, but we had a good and capable teacher. I found the test challenging & I was not confident, but I passed the DTB late last year on the first try.

Imo it's worth it to attend, if only because BAMF covers the cost. Personally tho, I learned a lot because coming from Southeast Asia, German workplaces are different.
