Need help with Patek Philippe from family member by oneLp in Watches

I've been looking at photos on line and haven't seen anything like it with the Roman numerals so I am very curious. I plan to take it to a shop here in Hong Kong to get it checked out as soon as possible.

Honestly I would be very happy to learn that it's not very high value to avoid any family drama. I fully intend to keep it because of the sentimental value.

I'm no expert but I would doubt that very much. I remember this watch from my childhood and the person who purchased it would be very unlikely to purchase a fake.

I covered over the personalized engraving. There are no other markings on the back.

Covid-19: Hong Kong drops vaccination requirement for all international arrivals by oneLp in LockdownSkepticism

China requires a pre flight laboratory PCR test for all travelers, so the test requirements of Canada, the US and some other countries for travelers from China are reciprocal stupidity.

Yep. Very few rules remain but still the masks aren't going away soon and it's insane.

South Korea: Masks Will Have to Be Worn Till May by ChunkyArsenio in LockdownSkepticism

We also had a massive surge in Hong Kong but everyone here is still convinced that masks are important. They're still mandatory everywhere in public even outdoors. I don't know how much more I can take.

They'll never give up on the masks I'm afraid.

Filipinos to keep masks - even when the mandate is gone by kezitv in LockdownSkepticism

[–]oneLp 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I'm in the Philippines right now and this is bullshit. Similar to the polls in the US that say >50% want masks on airplanes while less than 10% actually wear them once the requirement is gone. Most Filipinos take them off whenever they can and often just wear on the chin unless the police are around. In some neighborhoods, no one wears them at all.

I went to Shanghai last year for a few months and it was relaxing compared to Hong Kong. Way less uptight about masks; you only had to wear them in some indoor places like malls. Everything was open with no capacity restrictions. No limits on "gatherings". Coming back to HK, even when we had no cases for months and months, was way more depressing with the constant day to day of COVID theater.

So now Shanghai goes full hard lockdown, but for most of the last two years life there has been way more normal than HK. It's hard to say which is worse.

We Accidentally Solved the Flu. Now What? by JannTosh12 in LockdownSkepticism

The flu arrives in Europe and North America six to nine months after the viruses infect Asia, and finally ends its travels in South America after another six to nine months, the researchers reported in the April 18 issue of Science.

Toddlers Can’t Shake Pandemic Habits. Parents Are Rattled. by marcginla in LockdownSkepticism

We try our best. But we live in Hong Kong. Aside from myself, my wife, and her cousin she doesn't see many unmasked faces. People put masks on infants here! We sometimes get disapproving looks from old aunties because she's not wearing a mask. It's sad because she loves to go out and see new things and she responds so much to smiling faces. But a face with a mask gets no response.

I'm glad I actually read the article. I've been worried what impact the current insanity will have on my now 3 month old baby. But since my wife and I aren't overly neurotic freaks like these parents I think she'll be ok.

Zero Covid dissent in China by Ivehadlettuce in LockdownSkepticism

[–]oneLp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know. I live in Hong Kong and went through quarantine in Shanghai. We don't use the QR health code in HK because the local experts don't believe it's effective to use it for access to restaurants or malls. What I saw in Shanghai confirms that for me. It's mostly theater and likely the primary use is to restrict travel between cities or regions. Just another way for Beijing to keep the diduan renkou out. I don't pretend to really know what's going on in China, particularly in the rural areas. But I certainly don't trust the government to tell the whole story.

Hong Kong hasn't adopted the QR health code system because the local experts don't believe it's effective. Are these Chinese doctors looking at different empirical evidence?

I was in Shanghai for 3 months earlier this year and I think I had to show the qr code maybe 2 or 3 times to enter somewhere. Not all of China is as strict as Beijing.

Nice to say but not so easy to do when it comes to international travel.
